Hello Bev and other interested members, I am also here and thought the list had gone quiet due to a member complaining about the chat that was not necessarily on family history. In my opinion part of this wonderful list was (is) the companionship and helpfulness of the list, everyone appears to encourage when one's searching begins to appear nigh on impossible. Keep up the good work everyone. Zola Researching : Pearce (Pierce), Barter, Beach (Betsch) Mahoney, Hart, Woolner, all in the high country area, plus the following Henderson, Mack, Addison, Freeman, Gracie, Nielson. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bev Walker" <bbwalker@vic.chariot.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 11, 2004 9:11 AM Subject: RE: [HC] no messages > Hi Denise, > I too am here, most of the time, plugging away at breaking > down all the brick walls my ancestors appear to have built > around themselves. Hi Denise, Bev, Zola, Ray and everyone that I have missed I have days where I can contribute and others where its head down and ---up working on putting all this gobbley gook together. I will try and explain what I'm up too, I am putting together a book that is about a group of Irish from Limerick, parishes being Glin and Shannagolden they were sent to Botany Bay in 1839 and were the first assisted passengers (others being convicts) They were given hell in Botany Bay as the squatters saw then as the beginning of ridding Ireland of is paupers at the squatters expense. Only three of this group remained in Sydney. The others headed and settled in areas like the Tumut, Manaro, Yass, Yackandandah, and Pakenham.(Gipplands before it had a road 1841) Their main purpose was to work and bring out family members and then they bought out family, so they started like a pyramid which criss-crosses the High Country. And they stayed very much as a cohesive group. There are also letters that they have written back to Ireland sending money etc.. Some of the names are: Healy, Dempsy, Nash, Nolan, Sheehy, Sheahan, O'Connor, O'Brian, Costello, Culhane, Enright, Kennelly, Hayes, Griffin, Gallagher, Danahar, McNamara, O'Connell, Connelly, Donnelly, Shanahan, Fitzgerald. (very Limerick names) For example: The Yackandandah family were the James O'Conor (connor) from Loughill near Glin parish and his wife Johanna Welch, with their four children they set off from Botany Bay with a dray and made it to Tumut where he was employed. In 1841 he is squatting at Gooquek Flat, then 1849 appears in Kiewa Valley. Then in 1853 he is leasing Murramurranbong station near Yackandandah. Then he is found in Beechworth. His son built the Junction Hotel (later Blazing Stump) near Wodonga. Their descendants are still around the North East today. So why I have put all this here is because from time to time I will need support from anyone that has connections with these names. For example Zola some of their descendants took off to New Zealand during the Goldrush in Otago. Are you able to access mining registers over there around Pipers Flat, I'm looking for John Culhane and wife Ellen nee O'Connor (1868) he returned and settled at Briagolong and James Enright and Bridget (nee)Hastings, I think he died over there or Bathurst (1872). He had a pub at Grant near Dargo. Hi Kerry, You mentioned Costello in your group, was that a P. Costello? No, not the one that handles all our cash, but one who had property in the Carboor, Whorouly South area in the early years. Cheers Ray. ----- Original Message ----- From: Kerry <kerryb@austarnet.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 11, 2004 10:25 PM Subject: Re: [HC] no messages > Hi Denise, Bev, Zola, Ray and everyone that I have missed > > I have days where I can contribute and others where its head down and ---up > working on putting all this gobbley gook together. > > I will try and explain what I'm up too, I am putting together a book that is > about a group of Irish from Limerick, parishes being Glin and Shannagolden > they were sent to Botany Bay in 1839 and were the first assisted passengers > (others being convicts) They were given hell in Botany Bay as the squatters > saw then as the beginning of ridding Ireland of is paupers at the squatters > expense. Hi Ray The Costello I have came out fairly late 1890's James his parents are John Costello and Mary Ryan. He then married into the Culhanes at Crooked River, then purchased the Ensay Hotel his son purchased the Royal Hotel in Bairnsdale and another son Kevin wrote many poems on the High Country that have been published, he died as a POW. But I am chasing a Jeremiah Costello and a James that were at Crooked River Grant around the mid 1860's to see if there is a connection, these may have settled over that way. The James late 1890's is from Windgap Co Kilkenny, Seeing he came out when the gold days were at an end, why he ended up at such a remote place as Talbotville suggests that he may have been related to other Kilkenny people there who were the Phelans and Maguires who married in to the Kirks (Quirk) and the Culhanes from Limerick. The Maquire Kirk then relate to very old families like the Grays, Worcestors etc.. from the High Plains. I will try and follow these Costellos up, thanks Ray, where did they come from originally, Limerick or Kilkenny ? Costello? No, not the one that handles all our cash, but one who had property in the Carboor, Whorouly South area in the early years.
