Hello list, I have been trying to trace my great grandfather's line. His name is William John Henry Griffiths. I located his marriage record in Perth, Australia and it states he was born in Victoria. It states his mother's name as Ruby Mary. I could not locate his birth until I was lucky enough to find him on the WW 2 military roll website. It states he was born 31 July 1910 in Corryong, Victoria. I was able to locate his birth and downloaded a copy. There is no father listed. The mother is listed as Ruby Mary Griffiths. It states she is 18 years old and was born in Greg, Greg, New South Wales. I then searched for a birth in Greg, Greg, New South Wales around 1892 and could not locate one. So I did a search in Victoria and found a Ruby Mary Griffiths born 29 January 1892 in Tintaldra, Victoria. This birth record matches the information on William's birth record except for Ruby's birth place. It stated she was born in Greg, Greg. I looked at a map and see that Greg, Greg sits right next to Tintaldra and the New South Wales side. Is it possible she was born in Greg, Greg but registered in Tintaldra? Or is it possible she was just born in Tintaldra? This is a brick wall for me. I really want to confirm this is the right Ruby Mary Griffiths. Does anyone have suggestions on how to prove this is the right Ruby Mary Griffiths? I did locate her death record and it states she was born in Tintaldra and had lived in Victoria for 81 years. It states her married name is Ruby Mary Cullum. It states she married Thomas Joseph Cullum in Seymour, Victoria at 23 years of age. So if she had William John Henry Griffiths at 18 that would fit this date. It lists 5 daughters on the death record but does not list William Jogn Henry Griffiths. If William was born out of wedlock would they not list his name on this death record? Or could she have sent him to a orphanage because she could not take care of him at 18 years old? Any help would be appreciated? Was there Census's taken in Australia and what years did they take them? Best regards, Charles Thompson Washington State, USA
Hi Charles, One suggestion is to check on the birth certificate of one of the 5 daughters if you can locate, as previous children should be listed on subsequent births in Victoria. That may help to prove if you have correct person. If he is not mentioned, may suggest that he was brought up by others, as you suggested. He should be on her death certificate, but not always the case. Depends who is the informant on the death - they may not have known about this first child. You could try to locate decendents of other 5 children as they may have a family story which confirms your story. Someone else may have further suggestions.
