Hi again Carmel The original squatters in this area 1848 was William Furlonge [Barwidgee pastoral run]with 28,000 acreas along side this area was John Hill [Myrtle Creek pastoral run which became Myrtleford] 35, 000 acres in 1852 Barwidgee was leased to Richard Box, then passed through several hands The land was then sold as soldier settlements in 1919. I know that Patrick Toner and his wife Sarah Prendergast were in this region at the same time or just after William Furlonge and from an old manuscript I read years ago written aound 1840's it is stated that there was a hut situated at Waterloo used by the early drovers passing from Buckland overland where they would stay there. No proper dwelling was built at Barwidgee until Richard Box took it over. From off the top of my head.. it has been passed down that Waterloo was the original name of the area, before being called Barwidgee, this could have been taken from the name of the hut or first Barwidgee homestead. I know that in the early 1900's my family lived next door to Toner's and they called their property Waterloo Stud after the original Barwidgee Homestead or area. Also it was called that when I gew up in Myrtleford. Also there was a reef called Waterloo Reef (now callled Barwidgee Creek) Yes I have heard of the Wood family from there but not Knaggs. Most of the early settlers came to Barwidgee and Mudgegonga from Beechworth, Stanley and Hillsborough. The land Act of 1869 allowed them to apply for an allotment The following is from a survey 1918 for the Parish of Barwidgee 1876 Thomas Wood, Arthur Clingin 1877 Francis and Edward Hardy, Alexander Robinson 1879 F. Tuthill, Patrick Larkin, MT Carroll, Thomas Madigan 1880 John Carroll 1882 Patrick Murray 1883 J & G Hardy, and Nicholas Prendergast 1884 Patrick Toner, John Robinson, Lawrence Murphy 1890 B De Piazza 1891 P Pini The following is for the Parish of Mudgegonga (this is in between Barwidgee and Yackandandah.) 1879 John Brown 1881 P O'Callaghan 1884 Patrick Leonard 1885 John Wood, Thomas Morrison, Thomas Little, J Trezise (used to live at Waterloo) 1886 Thomas Evans, C.W.
