When James Woodland was elected to Council (Wodonga) in 1871, he walked 7 or 8 miles to council meetings from his farm in the West Wodonga area....... James Woodland, the first president, resigned with Thomas Reidy on 29.5.1877. After Rowan Lockhead resigned as Shire Secretary, James took up the position in 1880 and continued to occupy it until his death in 1913.
