Ruby was bridesmaid at the wedding of Jessie Haeffner on 22nd May 1895. - Jessie was my grandmother and Ruby was her niece. Denise The Marriage of Mr. Harold Clements Allen (accountant Bank of Vic Wilaura) eldest son of the late Mr. Frederick Allen the well known Brewery proprietor and Mrs. Allen of High St Beechworth to Miss Ruby Jane Sutherland eldest daughter of Mr. Neil Sutherland (secretary of the Ovens District Hospital, Beechworth) and Mrs. Sutherland was celebrated at the residence of the bride's parents, "Rogart" Church St Beechworth on Saturday Feb 12th 1921. The Rev Robert B Macleod (Presbyterian) performed the ceremony. As the bride entered the room with her father the Wedding March was artistically played by Miss Melva Warren. The Bride, who was given away by her father, wore a handsome frock of ivory crepe de chine with tunic bodice, the skirt being relieved with loose shaped panels at the sides, and exquisite hand embroidery in floss silk decorated the tunic and panels. A wreath of orange blossoms secured the handsome Brussels net veil, and she carried a bouquet of choice white flowers and asparagus fern, with white satin streamers (the gift of Mrs. Thomas Dobel of Melbourne). The bride was attended by her sister Miss Edna A Sutherland and Miss Ernie Allen sister of the bridegroom. The former wore a dainty white crepe de chine frock finished with hand embroidery trimmings, and white picture hat, with a brim of all over lace and trellised ribbon crown and streamers, trimmed with saxe blue hand made flowers. The latter was gowned in a Paris net dress, the skirt being frilled from the waist and a pale blue sash made a pretty finish. She wore a drooped biscuit straw hat trimmmed with saxe flowers and black velvet ribbon streamers. Both carried posies of pink roses and ferm with stramers of pale blue satin ribbon. The bridgegroom's gifts to the bridesmads were a gold brooch set with pearls and aquamarine and gold locket respectively. Mr John Joy, brother in law of the bridegroom, in the unavoidable absence of the bride's brother was best man and Master Robert Macleod acted as groomsman. As the bride was leaving the house a horsehsoe and kewpie was placed on her arm by little Miss Ilma Dobel. The receiption was held in the spacious board room adjoining, which was nicely decorated for the occasion where the bride's mother, becomingly gowned in a black crepe de chine dress, relieved by an ivory tucked net front and band, embroidery trimmings, received the guests. The bridegroom's mother was smartly attired in a dress of navy blue crepe de chine, with an overdress of navy floral voile. After the wedding dinner which was served by Mr. Joseph Tanswell in his usual up to date style, the usual toasts were honoured, the Rev. Robert B Macleod officiating as chairman. Amid showers of confetti and rose leaves, the bride and bridegroom left by motor for Chiltern at 2 pm. to catch the train en route for Melbourne where the honeymoon was spent. The bride travelled in a pretty gabardine costume, relieved by vest and collar of ivory crepe de chine, and a black picture hat smartly trimmed with black pipings and saxe blue hand and flowers. The dresses and costume were designed and completed by the mother of the bride and Miss Gerytrude Duncan of Beechworth. The bridegroom's present to the bride was a gold Nellie Stewart bangle, and the bridge's gift to the bridegroom a pair of gold sleeve links. After the departure of the happy couple the guests returned to the drawing room where an excellent programme of vocal and instrumental music was capably rendered by Miss Melva Warren, Mrs Macleod and the Misses Wendt and McKeown.
