Thank You Brian The event is on a Fanny Charlotte Wells (nee Ellen) who died in an accident on the Old Buckland Gap road on 20th Jan 1900, seemingly a horse with jinker bolted. Hi Denise, Thanks, I've read through this inquest at the PRO. Other miners to die in accidents at the Homeward Bound were John Dunn in 1875 and Joseph Moyle 1877. This is the only 'Hillsborough' inquest that does not mention one of 'my' families. Hi All, Am cleaning up my e-mails - arduous task and came across the one below. As a so called Beechworth 'local' I'm wondering where this Battley Town was because I've never heard of it. So I'd be grateful if someone could enlighten me. Oh by the way if any of you ever read that the Beechworth Courthouse was made of sandstone - you have my permission to go poo hoo because it was made of local honey coloured granite which I think came from Fiddes Quarry. The only reason I bring this up is because last night I read in a book written by a local Beechworth author that the courthouse was made of sandstone - I nearly fell out of my wheelchair in surprise. These old townships are the subject - so I will put it over again. Whilst researching I came across reference to a township named Woolshed. Not the one near Beechworth but one near Bright, so can I suggest that if you have a Woolshed on the tree, double check which one it might have been. This Bright Woolshed came into being early 1862 I think - a check thru the archives will reveal my first posting about it and only in the past couple of months. Denise
Hi Anne I put this over some time go well before the 18th December and Ray (says Joan on email header) answered. It was somewhere between B/worth and Tarrawingee (Hey, I forget, Ray will know). This guy set up his own town, shop , blacksmith, race course etc and was always advertising. Races (which Ray knows about) were busy affairs if the newspaper reports were anything to go by. He died as per original email below - but the place kept on advertising -I think there must have been a Jr Battley.
