Hi Kerry, Yes, the baby was only a few hours old so daddy buried it. I guess it happened quite often in those days. Maybe the grave was never marked? Or maybe it was well away from the house. One of the Myrtleford burials my gg-grandfather didn't organise! Hi Anne, Being an old Beechworth identity, you will recall "White Post" Rd, going off the B'Worth to Wang Rd, at Everton (left coming from B'worth) That is where Battley town was situated,Hotel on th B'worth side on the corner, racecourse behind hotel. Originally set up as "Toll gate" town. But being very astute "gentlemen" the miners and others swung away either side of the toll house, so it was later removed to Black Springs. As a so called Beechworth 'local' I'm wondering where this Battley Town was because I've never heard of it. So I'd be grateful if someone could enlighten me. Oh by the way if any of you ever read that the Beechworth Courthouse was made of sandstone - you have my permission to go poo hoo because it was made of local honey coloured granite which I think came from Fiddes Quarry. The only reason I bring this up is because last night I read in a book written by a local Beechworth author that the courthouse was made of sandstone - I nearly fell out of my wheelchair in surprise. Hi Denise, I knew Evans Bros had Hurdle Creek for a short time, but was led to believe that they purchased from Daniel Evans,(a cousin), with David Evans Divesting of his share (50%)of the flour mill, Murphy Street Wangaratta, as part of the payment. Wm. Clarke and David Evans built the mill. The price of L5000.00.00, would be quite reasonable as the property was of 15000 acres, therefore 6 shillings & 8 pence per acre. I have spoken to John and David Evans (not the one that bought the property) since you put in this snippet and enquiry, and both believed that E.Bros. had bought from Daniel Evans, so they are both very thankful for your information.
