The Ovens Spectator under the proprietorship of GS Searle is out to hit the newstands. Housed in new brick premises built by Mr Stevens next to Dr Fox's in Camp St - it will go very hard with a weakly Constitution b/w a fresh & lively bautling & the old "Onions and Murphy" which, wonderful to say, is not dead yet. Chris
Hoping someone has access to a Directory at home for the name GRUBER in Melbourne My own Sands is 'dead' Thanks Denise

Hi Simon, Kirby's Flat (now Kirby Flat) is a few kms south of Yackandandah on Bell's Flat Road, and the site of Roper's Store is known, although there's nothing left of it of course. Yackandandah Historical Society have an 1856 map clearly showing the site (they may have copies still available for sale at about $20 I think). As you are probably aware, we have two of William Lock's babies buried here at Yackandandah (1861 & 62). In the same grave in the C of E Section, but unfortunately unmarked & we have no record of where. Hi denise, I believe at White Hills all the hills were numbered. I remember something about this on the Goldfields list not so long ago. Could someone please tell me where Kirby's Flat is/was? I've managed to track down my William Lock to this location in 1861. He was a storekeeper to William Roper who ran a hotel & store there. Cheers and Happy New Year. Simon
Thanks Paul! All worked well and it's up and running again. Will try that in future for others that seem to be reluctant to start. best wishes, techno peasant (Jenny) -----Original Message----- From: Paul Woolard <pwoolard@melbpc.org.au> To: AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 2 Jan 2006 14:07:18 +1100 Subject: Re: [HC] Sands Directory - technical chat Hi Kerry and Denise, Firstly I assume you are talking about the Sands & Kenny Directory for 1857 - 1861. If so, try the following:- If the CD is autorunning , browse the contents. Otherwise use Windows Explorer or similar to browse the contents of the CD. Double-click on the HTML folder and then double-click on the file, Index.html. This should start the program for you. If you use the program often, or think you may forget these steps, don't double-click on Index.html. Instead, high-light it and right-click. Select "Send to Desktop - Make Shortcut", then close the open programs. On the desktop, right-click on "Shortcut to Index.html", select "Rename" and overtype "Shortcut to Index.html" with "Sands & Kenny 1857 - 1861". Now any time you want to use the directory, put the CD in the same drive and double-click on this icon. Hi I am new to this list and trying to break through my "brick wall" my G G Grandparents. John ROSS & Mary RAINES no dates, no records on BDMs. Their son my G Grandfather also John George ROSS was born in Geelong 18/09/1874, on his marriage cert 28/05/1902 their address was given as Wangaratta. My grandmother's youngest sister who is still alive mid 80's says she never saw them but she knows her father had a sister Olive whom my grandmother was named after. Any clues??? Anyone researching the same people? Cheers Jan Hunt
