    3. I just love to see you all running in different directions looking for more information on the subject of the post (eg another mine) (g). Perhaps the SLV has never been so busy? Certainly Anthony is keeping them open (g) Actually I'm very interested to hear what you have found out from these postings, have you followed any of them further, discovered new material, more information on the lives of your family, or whatever you happened to gain. 3. There is a well-worn path from my house to the SLV these days I can assure you (g) From my point of view, the numerous postings have encouraged me to look at the family history from different points of view. That information on every facet of their lives does exist, you do however need to be persistent, and should attempt to acquire as much information as possible to help construct the larger picture. I am currently reading a book 'Land, Labour and Gold' by William Howitt. It details the overland journey from Melbourne to Spring Creek in 1852, and includes very descriptive writings on Spring Creek, Reids Creek, Nine Mile Creek, and Buckland Valley gold rush. I'd recommend anyone interested in the 1852-1854 period to find a copy. 3. Denise, Doing a "Suzie Zada and Geelong Job" on some of the indexes in the Benalla & District Family History Group rooms and came across a reference to an article in the Benalla Standard of 5 April 1898. States in Part; The Cobb & Co Coaches of Messer's Crawford and Co (that should get your hackles up quickly vbg ) sustained a Jewellery robbery from the Chiltern and Beechworth coach. A little girl found it and her parents returned it to Messer's Crawford & Co. Wonder if you have the whole article, if there is any more. All Benalla Standards have not been reeled so would need to look up the article in copies held, if still available. Let me know if interested. Cheers, Bill Willett. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Denise" <denisem@powerup.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, 11 July 2004 1:33 Subject: [HC] US States > Hi everyone, Not quite the northeast of Vic but several of us have US ancestors who did live in the NorEast, so I thought I'd post the abbreviations of the states in the US. 1. QUON NOEY
    2. Peter Ross
    3. Can anyone help with any information concerning this man or his family prior to 1900? His many descendants in the NE now have the Anglicised name of Quoney. A family member believes the original Quon Noey came to Victoria about 1855, married Sophia HIPWORTH (nee McLEAN?) in 1875 but there the story becomes more confused in that he's believed to have died and been buried in Yackandandah, exhumed and remains sent back to China. There are no records of this at Yack Cemetery. It's strange, since BDMs say he died at Walhalla 20/3/1879 aged 52 and is buried there. There may have been two Quon Noeys. Any info at all may help locate him at a place & time, help me with the Yack Cem records and the Quonoey family with their project. Peter R

    3. 6.10.83 Snails - The gardener at the Ovens Hospital found seven genuine English snails. The interesting little creatures (not my words believe me) who carry their 'houses' in the shape of shells on their backs were objects of curious interest to those who saw them, particularly to Australians, to whom the sight was a rare one, while it revived recollections of home among those in whose country such snails are common. - The Buffalo Heifer Estate - 450 acres freehold land and 15,000 grazing right up for sale. Describes the property rather well if anyone interested. John Fearn is leaving the district. - Murmungee Gold Sluicing Co. - first adjourned general meeting held 3/10/83 Albion Hotel Ford St B/worth. present - W Dalgleish J Gillan James Gillies T M Ellen A McQuilton H Ellen R Varley Ah Quong J Cowan M Ellen W Ellen C J O'Sullivan M Moye A R Cane John Gillies J E Toye P Feely E Jessop represented by proxy - D Kelty M Monaghan A Scullen S Mummery C Mummery J Stapleton P and M Connors C S Mummery J Neary J Neary Miss M Moye D O'Sullivan E Neary Alex McQuilton J McQuilton Thomas Mummery P Jessop C O'Brien W Ellen Arch. The town then has two brigades for the next 20 years approximately. Rivals, caused by some of the members of this brigade having belonged to previous brigade and having been guilty at a fundraiser for the brigade, of misconduct. Suspended from Brigade #1, then up and resigned, and then grouped with others and formed Brigade #2. - Mr W Carkeek Tallangatta has a four legged on day old chicken.. One pair grows out of the neck underneath the wings, the other pair where they should be. It was killed by a native cat otherwise it might have lived to be a walking wonder. - Codfish caught near Corowa, sent by rail to B/worth. Weighed 97 lbs. - Cook and laundress wanted by Mrs W H Foster Beechworth - Staunch horse adapted for buggy or spring car for sale - apply B Barnes Camp ST Beechworth or R Barnes maybe. -0

    3. Ronda thanks. I wonder why HAC bothered writing for his son Walter, unless of course W was still in W.A as I half suspect. Many thanks for this.
