    3. Denise, Maybe, if he worked for the Agriculture Dept, he lived in one of the residences provided. For example, Ellinbank (not far from here) is run by the Ag Dept, and includes many people living on site, as it is a research farm. Maybe it was a similiar set up over there. (My husband works for the Ag Dept!) 3. Merren hi. The few years in WA were/are a complete mystery. I must admit I've not chased this grandfather , been busy over the past 6 years with his own father, Hiram. Grandfather Walter from BDMs shows he was in Beechworth in 1900 (registration of birth in B/worth, so probably still down Carbor-Everton way living) and then a year later in W.A. where my aunt was born followed by my mother. I haven't bothered to get mum's birth certificate until now, as there has been plenty to do, but now that Hiram's finished I will now chase Walter. Ronda's find at the PROV is a godsend. I see where he worked/lived in the Waroona / Hamel area of W.A. and was back in Melbourne by Jan 1906 - but still over in W.A. in October 1905. I thank Ronda for this - it's great. Why they went, what Wally did, I've no idea, altho one letter was written from Agricultural Dept. Hamel W.A. Strange to head a letter with your work address and not your home address, given the reason for writing in the first place. Was he attracted like 'so many of the others", to the fields, --- I don't know. Half suspect and it gets stronger each day, that there was a parent/child problem. Hiram thought Wally lazy, wouldn't work were his words, while Wally relied on Hiram to take care of his 'obligations'. And from the small pieces my mother said to me when I WAS listening, Wally was not the father we all dream about. 3. Hi Merren, Joan McKibbin (dec. Nov 2003) gave me William Blewett's bank book a couple of years ago - I am very lucky. The bank book has all the transactions written in by hand 1883 - 1896. It shows where he got out the 3 quid to pay J.H.Meek, the presbyterian minister, when he married Alice Waterson in August 1894. 3. Denise Out of curiosity when was he in WA. I believe Hance McGowan went there circa Jun 1895 - I believe this based on some information in his obituary- "Like so many others he was attracted to the golden prospects of Western Australia, proceeding thither at the beginning of last winter. There he suffered great privations, and contracted an illness from which he never recovered" - on his death 25/1/1896 in Hillsborough. Many thanks Ronda for the copies sent in the mail. Fortunately it told me two or three new things about grandfather. One, the timeframe for the arrival back in Victoria, and most importantly where they were in W.A. Another interesting item was the address at top of one letter 'Agricultural Department" Hamel, W.A. Now what on earth was he doing there! This is the best I've ever had on him, so thanks very much Ronda. regards Denise --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free. About half past one o'clock the kitchen chimney attached to the brick building occupied as a general store and dwelling house by Mr. Christopher Mummery and containing 8 rooms caught fire. Mrs. M. and her niece who were the only ones home extinguished the fire with the assistance of a nephew who noticed the blaze when passing. Two hours later when engaged in whitewashing the walls of one of the front rooms (making preparations for Christmas-tide) Mrs. M's attention was called by her niece to a strange sound in the store. Flames were bursting thru the ceiling of the storeroom at a point underneath the gutter of the double roof which was shingled. Exercising all haste Mrs. M and her two assistants go out the store books (except one) and a quantity of clothing and bedding; but so rapidly did the fire spread that nothing further was saved and the large store and its contents were soon a mass of smoking ruins. 3. Dear Denise and all, I have sent you by private mail an excel file of Theatre Licenses for St. Georges Hall the Odd Fellows Hall in Beechworth. These appear as the only entries for Beechworth in this volume. Only a few entries. I am currently transcribing lists of Children who were at the Industrial School or a Reformatory who were 'licensed' out to someone - presumably to work for them. I believe there are other lists of those at the Industrial School. This book shows the surname, given name of each child, surname, given name and address of who they were sent to, the date of the licence and the date it was recorded, a correspondence number and a remarks column. I am quite surprised there are so many names. This book is a licensing record and there are several others, so I have a way to got yet. It shows licences for holding theatrical performances, universities claiming bodies of those hanged, water licences etc. it is a varied book, but rather interesting. I expect it will take me a long time to list them all. I generally keep an eye out for surnames I see on the various lists, but if anyone thinks their ancestor may have run a hall/pub that required a licence to have theatrical entertainment or had a vessel that may have wanted to enter the Bay just give me a name and/or place. Of course if you had an ancestor that was hanged it may show who claimed the body but not what they did with it!! I do remember reading a file some years ago that contained notes from a doctor of sorts who examined the heads/skulls/brains of murders and other criminals to see if there was something significant.......................... 3. Hi Denise, Twice in one day !!!!! This Lott Healy is the brother of Bridget White (nee Healy) of Myrtleford. The Healy's daughter Margaret married Mathew Cock of mining heritage etc.. Also the J. Morrison on this list is a brother in law of Lott's and they in turn were from Sunnyside/Glen Wills area. I think there is someone on this list who has published on the Renton/Morrison descendancy. Lott Healy trained and bred quite a few horses in his time and was out at Mudgegonga for quite a white. His granddaughter was Daphne HOneychurch (nee Morrison) of Bright. Kind regards and many thanks again for taking time to type all this. 3. I hope this makes it thru the clogged mail at rootsweb and to the list. This is the best I've ever had on him, so thanks very much Ronda. regards Denise

    2. Patrick O'Sullivan
    3. G'day All, I've just been contacted by a US member of the Shanahan Family in the US, & was wondering if anyone on this list has connections? The Shanahans came from Borrakiella, Co. Cork, Ireland. (Shanahan's Noorongong property was called Borakiella.) Of 13 chn., 5 migrated in stages to Australia: Michael, Bartholomew (Bart), Margaret, Julia and Tim (Barney), who in 1872 joined his brothers at Yackandandah, working near Albury, and with a surveying party around Mitta and the north-east." (From Di Carroll's CD) I'm connected through the Mongan family (Ellen Mary married Timothy Shanahan). Cheers. Pat..
