Hi Ray thank you. Any indication on the timeframe re it is saying C C and MC ? REason I ask there was another partner for a few years up to a time in the 80s and I can't locate a definite year. Maybe the OMA would tell me (g) but so far it hasn't. Connolly or one of them had been involved for many years, McCurdy only a few years and another likewise. Hi Denise, Came across this little snippet for you. The Commercial Hotel, Wangaratta, 3 stories high, built by William Clarke in 1855. Clarke died in 1871, the hotel was sold to William Murdoch, who died pre 1880, his wife then ran the hotel for several years, she built a Theatre on the side of the hotel and leased the stables at the rear to Connelly, Crawford and McCurdy. At this time coaches ran between Beechworth and Melbourne. Cheers Ray
Hi Phil. I don't know about your Conways and my Conways. Mine (all two of them ) were born in Tulla Co Clare, one married in Tulla and this was Catherine Sherry. Mary came assisted to B/worth in 1853, Catherine came (not found) and the first I have on her is late 1857 with a birth in b/worth. No other records have been found to date in Ireland. The family vanished! Thanks for the job, I must read the early papers again for Sherry and see if they were there earlier than 57. regards Denise ----- Original Message ----- From: "Phil O'Reilly" <oreillyp@bigpond.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 14, 2004 11:30 PM Subject: RE: [HC] Sherry - Black Springs Reply > Denise, I have some interest in the Conways. > John Conway emigrated 1860 from Northern Ireland. Denise, I have some interest in the Conways. John Conway emigrated 1860 from Northern Ireland. He was friends with Edward Maloney. They emigrated together. John Conway married Joanna Leahy. Edward Maloney married Ellen Clancy. Jonn's daughter Mary Conway married Edward's son William Maloney(born 1876 Gisborne)in Corowa NSW. Thats about all I have at the moment on that line. 1883 brought the tragic death of Mr. John Turner.........walking home from the Commercial pub in B/worth. The winding up of his affairs, the replacements for his important positions he had held - all interesting. His dear wife then imparting her musical talents, perhaps to make ends meet?? Although Willie Heyenga had left the Ovens area and had moved to the Upper Murray, he still made the news with the unpaid newspapers chasing him.... My elusive Klip who vanished - perhaps a full report of an insolvency court case where he may have still held deeds to a pub in the Upper Murray may shine more light for me. To Denise, once again a big thanks for your enthusiasm, dedication & willingness to post. It has all been wonderful reading. Hi Denise The highlight for me was seeing various members of the Von Mallesch family popping up in the papers (yeah, some more evidence they were there!!), and learning that one could play for several cricket teams in a season! It has been fascinating and enlightening reading some of the recipes and keeping up with the goings on and gossip from around the district. Thank you for sharing with us. It is greatly appreciated. Kind Regards Roz Voullaire roz@voullaire.com.au
1883 doesn't appear to have been a very fruitful year. I don't suppose we can win them all. That's it for new news folks. One day I will go back over the papers, but not for a while. I'll then chase up some fresh names. Denise
Ray, do you have the Wangaratta 1824-1963, book? Zadok Porteer is mentioned in it along with other Portsrs, Silas Stan Major Gen Selwyn Miss Mr Mr E. May be worth trying in the Library if you don't have it. Also Porter Bros mentioned. Denise
Denise A quieter year for my lot, but still lots of interesting snippets. Your detailed listing of the Stanley school info below was most interesting - placing my families and other names in context. Also the fact that James Muter was a singer has intrigued my mother-in-law. Thanks so much for all the effort. Hopefully more newspapers may head your way once you have finished your book. I am interested in following up the death of George READ/Y. There is an excerpt from the Chisholm St., School (on site of the old National School) Centenary Book to the effect that George Frederick READY a teacher at the school was found dead in the room of his house one school morning in 1853. "A History of the State Primary School No 643, Chisholm St, Wangaratta 1850-2000" - Dawn Floyd ISBN 0 646 389521 Would anyone know if this book is still in print and if I might be able to contact the author Dawn Floyd ?
