    3. An interesting page to look at on a cold Melbourne Sunday afternoon. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~framland/acts/actind.htm The Act of Parliament allowing a man to marry his widow's sister was enacted in 1907 and that the Act to allow a woman to marry her husband's brother (after said husband died!) was enacted in 1921. There must have been any number of illegal marriages before those dates, then! Mary

    3. The Nine Mile Hotel was situated on the Omeo - Glen Valley Road, now known as the Knocker Track. Today the site is marked with a sign "Stayleville". Originally the building was the home of the Reeves Family and in 1891, the family decided to have the premises licensed to cater for the passing travelers. Firstly they applied for an Australian Wine License, but within two years applied for a full Victuallers License. The Knocker Track is very much the same today as it was last century and worthy of a drive. You drive through the Omeo Valley and turn to the left and proceed through the gate. This track takes you through to the Omeo Highway, between Glen Wills and the old site of Sunnyside. Although there is no relics of the site of the Nine Mile Hotel to be found today, older resident in the district can vividly remember the old chimney standing at the site some forty years ago.

    3. Hi all, I'm cleaning out my bookcase and find I have no real need any longer for two books by Graham Jones (dec'd). (I guess I'll regret this one day). Before Ebay I want to give those on the list a chance. First one is "There Was a Time" by Graham Jones - limited edition of 1000 copies. A Shire of Wangaratta Bi-Centenary Celebration. Mine is in excellent condition like new. If anyone in the SEQld area and is happy to collect from me I am looking at $40. If further afield - add postage. ----- The second book is "Memories of Oxley" an absolutely fabulous book. It was second hand when I got it and again is in excellent condition, like new. For anyone with an interest in the area, I recommend this book. It is FULL of names and histories of families. I am happy to get $30.00 from locals who collect otherwise plus postage. Please email privately if interested, to save clogging up the airways. regards Denise

    3. Hi all Is anyone chasing Fred Herman, a German?? Lived in a tent & eaked out a livelihood by digging on Wheeler's Creek. Died a lonely death near the junction of the Zulu and Wheeler's Creeks in 1895. By the time a Constable was able to reach him it was impossible to go thru the formality of a magisterial inquiry on account of the advanced stage of decomposition of the body, or to convey it to a cemetery on account of the rough track and the distance the body lay from vehicular aid. He was buried on the spot.... Chris

About half past one o'clock the kitchen chimney attached to the brick building occupied as a general store and dwelling house by Mr. Christopher Mummery and containing 8 rooms caught fire. Mrs. M. and her niece who were the only ones home extinguished the fire with the assistance of a nephew who noticed the blaze when passing. Two hours later when engaged in whitewashing the walls of one of the front rooms (making preparations for Christmas-tide) Mrs. M's attention was called by her niece to a strange sound in the store. Flames were bursting thru the ceiling of the storeroom at a point underneath the gutter of the double roof which was shingled. Exercising all haste Mrs. M and her two assistants go out the store books (except one) and a quantity of clothing and bedding; but so rapidly did the fire spread that nothing further was saved and the large store and its contents were soon a mass of smoking ruins. Insured in the Norwich Union Co. for £300 the stock for £800 and the household furniture for £100. Mrs M accounts for the fire by the presumption that a cinder from the burning chimney alighted on the singles unnoticed. 1. Re: [HC] RESEARCH
    2. Glenda Matthews
    3. Hi Mary, This sure is a difficult one. Hoddle Street Clifton Hill really narrows it down (g). Were there any local newspapers at that time? I know that "local" papers did go out of favour due to the dailies, but there might have been some sort of local newssheet. Probably no names published either, though. What about Local Government of the day - which council would it have been under then? Difficult to look up those court papers, if any, with no name. Could you ask a retired lawyer what sort of lists of cases were produced with perhaps more detail than what was the published list in the paper and if those still exist to be searched. Otherwise, if you know what part of Hoddle street, it might be worth a visit to see if anyone from that time still lives there, or if anyone knows someone who lived there then. Is there a List where you could put out a request - of course none as good as HC, but worth a try. We will all be interested to see if you get anywhere with this. Good Luck.
