HI Ronda Lovely to see the list back up and working Thanks for the great info. According to my database Jim (James Scott) Murray was born 3/12/1892 - so December 1982. My recollection of him in the early 70s was of a gentle giant of a man. And his wife Belle made the best scones. She had two stoves in her kitchen and another out the back - each reserved for its own speciality. I think the secret was all the now politically incorrect cream and butter that went into them! Thanks again Ronda - I am sure my m-i-l will be delighted to read this one about her uncle. Myrtleford R.S.L.'s oldest member, Mr. Jim Murray, was the guest of the Auxiliary and Sub-Branch at the Club Rooms on the occasion of his 90th birthday last Thursday. An open invitation was extended to relatives, R.S.L. personnel, and his friends at the Hospital Day Car Centre, and it really was a wonderful day, with 70 people attending. The theme of the table decorations and the birthday cake was in the read and white colours of Jim's Army Unit. The beautiful cake was made by Mrs Gladys Browne and decorated by Mrs. Loretta Yob. The cake was topped with an army hat and crossed rifles, all mould in icing, with rea and white colour patches around the base of the cake. Music for the afternoon was supplied by Mrs. Gwen Wood, and Mrs. Leslie Browne, delighted the guests with two solos from the popular "Sound of Music". President of the Sub Branch, Joe cook, extended welcome to all, and congratulated Mrs Murray on reaching the grand old age of ninety years. Mr. Tom Bustt supported the President in his remarks and spoke of the early years of the Murray family, and his own association with Mr. and Mrs. Murray. Speaking on behalf of the 34th District Board and Life Members, Mr. Bill Browne extended congratulations and mentioned Mr Murray's long association with the R.S.L. in Myrtleford and the whole district. President of the Ladies' Auxiliary, Mrs. Madge Garone, extended congratulations to Mr. Murray and said the ladies were delighted to have had the opportunity to arrange the party. It was wonderful to see so many come along to celebrate the occasion. She thanked the Auxiliary and Sub-Branch members for their efforts, all the relives and friends who came along, also Miss Walker and the hospital staff for their co-operation in arranging for the Day Care Centre friends to attend. The area officer of the Ladies'Auxiliary, Mrs Claire Green, travelled from Mulwala to be with Mr. Murray on his day, and expressed her delight to be able to say a few words on behalf of the whole area. Mr. Clarrie Murray expressed congratulations as the representative of the Murray family. Mr. Len Ablett spoke as a Councillor of the Shire, and member of the Football Club. Relatives, old friends and R.S.L. representatives attended from thoughout the local area, and Albury, Kergunyah, Yackandandah, Wodonga, Yarrawonga, Tangambalanga, Benalla, Allan's Flat, Wangaratta and Mulwala. During afternoon tea the guest cut his birthday cake, the candles being lit by his daughter, Mrs. Beryl Morgan. With sincerity and quite a deal of humour, Mr. Murrray thanked everyone concerned in making his birthday such a memorable occasion. --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free. Probably, Merren will know, I've just been too lazy to look it up! I'm looking through a scrap book of undated newspaper clippings one of my mother's cousins has lent to me, and I thought I'd better type up the Jim Murray birthday, as his wife was a Welshman (not that they mentioned that in the write up!) Relatives, old friends and R.S.L. representatives attended from thoughout the local area, and Albury, Kergunyah, Yackandandah, Wodonga, Yarrawonga, Tangambalanga, Benalla, Allan's Flat, Wangaratta and Mulwala. During afternoon tea the guest cut his birthday cake, the candles being lit by his daughter, Mrs. Beryl Morgan. With sincerity and quite a deal of humour, Mr. Murrray thanked everyone concerned in making his birthday such a memorable occasion.

Hi all, I know Cecily is Dodd related, and I recall someone asking me about Tanswell and they have an interest - was it Jackie C perhaps? I would like to hear from anyone with an interest in these two families, Dodd and Tanswel please. Edward Tanswell's daughter married Matthew Dodd\Dodd's son - I have been contacted by this couple's grandson. He is interested in talking to anyone who may be connected or interested. This guy has SO much information and is the custodian of many Crawford & Co. documents. More if you contact me off list. regards Denise

Gone Fishing!
Further to Mary's posting re changes in the Marriage Act is some additional information which was posted to the Suffolk-List in 2002 (and of course we abided by English Law and my family closet isn't rattling!!): The Deceased Wife's Sister's Marriage Act was finally passed in 1907 (and came into effect in 1908) after over a half-century of sometimes acrimonious debate; in 1921 this act was modified to allow marriage with a deceased brother's widow. In 1931 the Marriage (Prohibited Degrees of Relationship) Act legalised marriage between a man and deceased wife's aunts and nieces (& corresponding for a female); the Church of England came into line with civil law in 1940. The Marriage Act of 1835 made them illegal in the first place - The prohibition on marrying your brother's wife comes from an Old Testament text: "If a man shall take his brother's wife, it is an impurity: he hath uncovered his brother's nakedness; they shall be childless." (Leviticus xx,21.) Now you might well notice that this could easily mean don't take your brother's wife _while he is alive_, but the medieval church interpreted it to mean that people could not marry their deceased spouse's sibling, at all. The church did, however, grant dispensations from the prohibition. Before the Marriage Act of 1835 made them illegal, there was no outright civil ban on these marriages in England although they were certainly discouraged but they were considered voidable, (meaning either party could use the relationship as a reason to annul the marriage) but were not void. Many couples had to go to France to contract these marriages because the clergy in Britain opposed it because of the canon law. By the 1830's, eminent people who had contracted these marriages and feared they might later be declared void, sought to have their position stabilised and a bill was introduced by Lord Lyndhurst to regularise them. The bill that was passed in 1835 enacted that "all marriages which shall hereafter be celebrated between persons within the prohibited degrees of consanguinity or affinity shall be absolutely null and void to all intents and purposes whatsoever." At the same time the act did legalise all marriages within the prohibited degrees of affinity (i.e. with deceased wife's sister) that had been celebrated before August 31, 1835. That meant that all those eminent people (and their children) were safe. It was only any later marriages, after the date of the Marriage Act (1835) which were void. From 1841 onwards, bills to remove the prohibition were introduced in almost every Parliament and it finally passed in 1907. The issue prompted the classic line from Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta 'Iolanthe' - "We will prick that annual blister, marriage to deceased wife's sister". "On Tuesday, Mr. De Campo, in going along the Wooragee road, near Beechworth, saw a man sitting against a log a little distance back, near Newey's slaughter yards. In passing the same place on Wednesday he was surprised to see the man in exactly the same position. On approaching him he found the mad was dead. Constable Wyatt, on investigating the case, found that the deceased was secured to the log by a strap around it and his neck. The deceased was a stranger and nothing was found on the body to lead to identification. There was no money in the pockets of the dead man's garments. He was about 6 feet high and 60 years of age, clean shaved, except for a fair moustache, and his hair was turning grey. The body was taken to Beechworth." Corryong Courier - 22/10/1896 Chris
