    3. Hello Listers For those of you that are interested, there will be a book launch on Sunday, 12 September 2004 from 1.30pm at the Edi Hall of the following book: 'Edi: The History of Early Selection & Settlement, 1850 - 2002' The author is John Newton, a fourth generation member of a well-known Edi family (and also my cousin!!!) and the book is four years in the making. The book will be launched by Mr Ken Jasper (MLA, Murray Valley). There was a big article about this in the Wangaratta Chronicle on Wednesday, 25 August 2004 pg 2. If anyone would like a copy, I can scan it & e-mail it to you. The book should be a very very interesting & enlightening read to all. 3. Thanks to everyone who replied to my request for help, I have been away from my email for the past couple of weeks so here are the details. John PEARSE later changed to PEARCE, married Mary Elizabeth HART October 18th 1860 at Tarrawingee, on the M/cert he gives his birthplace as Albury, his occupation as Stockman, aged 21, living at Oxley, his father as John PEARSE, Stock-keeper. I am unable to find any record of his birth or anything to do with his father. Kerry has suggested looking in Church records NSW, this may turn up something, please advise where do I look for them. His mother's name is given as only "Mary aboriginal no surname"I have not been successful in finding anything about her at all. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and regards to all, Zola

    3. Hi Melissa, Firstly, are you really sure that Catherine was actually married to the first 'husband'? Secondly, you can check the graves at Beechworth Cemetery by contacting the Burke Museum. However, their records are not complete so you really need to visit the cemetery. My ggg-gf was not listed but I found him buried with his second wife when I went to look at her grave. Thirdly, with all of those children she probably married again. Here is a possible clue showing maiden name as JOHNSON instead of VAUGHAN: Digger - Pioneer Index. 3. HI List, I'm hoping someone might be able to help with some info on the Beechworth Cemetary while I wait for answers from them direct and from a few other sources to find out where he is buried in the cemetery. My GGG Grandfather George Henry King was buried at Beechworth on Dec 4 1882. I'm trying to locate the grave of his wife Catherine (nee Vaughan?) and am hoping she is buried with or near him. Catherine is my mystery woman, she was previously married and I'm running into brick walls. I have no info on her first husband other than he died in 1853 and they had 2 children. One of those children James, is my GG Grandfather. On his marriage and death cert he listed George Henry as his father (hence my saying he's my GGG GF). I'd really like to solve the mystery and find out who his father really was but I can't even find a death cert for Catherine. I don't know if the details on Catherines marriage cert to George are correct. Her surname at the time is listed as Vaughan and her father is listed as James Vaughan, I was expecting that her married name would have been used. If anyone has access to the cemetery records I would be most grateful for any help! _______ Melissa 0034/2004 assilem2@OBVIOUSozemail.com.au <--remove the OBVIOUS

But this book suggests Dodsworth and Moloney the original Wangaratta Brewery in 1876/77. "Snowden" (an animal that did more than any other of his species towards making this district famous for horse-breeding) is the subject of the other picture. Mr. Bowler's great horse is depicted "free and untrammelled" in one of the many luxuriant pastures of the Mitta Mitta. An appearance of litheness and activity is at once conveyed to the critic's eye as he glances as the painting of the old flea bitten grey, and the general contour of the horse's figure is so symmetrical, and so artistically delineated, that one can hardly help an exclamation of admiration for both horse and the artist's portrayal of him. Still greater effect could have been given to the horse's outline had the background of the landscape been darker, but, nevertheless, the whole picture is worthy of warm praise, and we venture to predict a great future for Mr. Cowley in the artist line."
