In June 1881, Hiram announced to a Council meeting that he was with the assistance of the Shire Secretary John W. Morton, preparing a history of Beechworth from the first discovery of gold up to the present time and it would be printed and distributed at Hiram's own expense. This work was done on the occasions of the International Exhibition and the census taken in April 1881. Attention to the resources and capabilities of the various districts of the Colony at the Exhibition, induced some Municipalities to issue pamphlets of a historical character. Hiram and John's book "A Historical Sketch of the Town of Beechworth and the District comprised within the United Shire of Beechworth" was such an endeavour from the introduction - "These productions are interesting and useful for, while they institute comparisons, they prevent from falling into oblivion names and events worthy of a more deserving fate. Those who enjoy the advantages flowing from settled institutions inaugurated by their predecessors should not allow such precedents and examples to be forgotten." I have a copy of this if anyone is interested. Many names mentioned, particularly in relation to council matters Denise
Thanks Di. I don't have much to offer but am interested to see what this John H did in Beechworth, and perhaps if someone is researching him, I can supply just a snippet. Hi all, Chasing anyone who may have had to follow up names who moved into southern-mid NSW. I've got reason to believe Hiram may well have had land in Wellington district NSW. Until now I thought it was paddocks - to use his words - in the B/worth area, but now that I know the man was in Bathurst around the same timeframe as the Wellington name crops up, I wonder if there is a connection Has anyone had to do any research into land particulars in that area, and can advise if there is anything online which may help me out. regards Denise
Looking for anyone who connects with one John Hassett who lived in the Beechworth district during the 1890s at least. Denise
Yes, Denise. About 7 miles south east of Castlemaine. Regards Irene R Bev, a good way to find hotels is to look in December and January newspapers for the area. The licenses were applied for in those months and were certainly listed in the OMA, so I "assume" in others as well. This town is over Kyneton way isn't it? Denise

Well there IS an Alma Rd in the St Kilda Elwood Brighton region (and Caulfield at a stretch); from memory the St Kilda cemetery backs onto it. And there were / are some Grammar schools that area too. Just checked the Melways - it starts just in St Kilda, runs through East St Kilda (cemetery backs into it as I thought), and then into Caulfield North. It stops at Hawthorn Rd which is near as a whisker to Malvern / Armidale. There is a St Michael's Grammar School in Redan St; Redan St runs parallel to Alma Rd and is the first street up. It is conceivable they sold off the school playing fields which would have gone through at some stage to Alma Rd. It is up the St Kilda end. Dawn Melbourne -----Original Message----- From: Peter L. If not Caulfield it could possibly be St Michael's - I think this is a bit closer to Alma Road.
