Hi Listers Does anyone know where I can reach Julie Clift. I host some NE and HC sites on her Tracking our Family Footsteps in Time, but can't reach her to change my email address on the site. The email address on the site does not work for me. Apologies for the cross-messaging Irene R
Bev. I hope you have found your missing lady. I don't know much at all about WA research but one done I shall venture down that line, so am interested in looking into things I find. I don't know of any death look ups for WA but joining the Chat DPA for WA may help you - via rootsweb. It seems quite an active list. Hi Denise, That is an interesting site. I have searched everywhere for a great aunt who I know was in Perth in 1921, to no avail. She was Johanna Tallent and on this site I have found a Josephine Tallent who married in 1915. Johanna was born in Ireland about 1856/7 I suppose I could do a death look up and maybe that would tell me. Do you know of a web site for deaths in Perth? Continuing on the sporting bits and pieces of late, my second son is playing in a State League Lacrosse Grand Final this Saturday. We have been in the finals for seven years and never cracked it, but come very close, so have everything crossed we will have a victory; if so the party afterwards will be great!! Ovens & Murray Advertiser 26th October 1972 Hillsborough School 889 An application for a vested Common School at Hilllsborough was first made by John Brown on 23rd March 1867. District Inspector Geary visited on 3rd August 1867 and recommended that a school should be granted. This was done by a board order on 3rd October 1867. The local committee after approval had been granted by the Board of Education bought from Ellen Kennedy a building previously a hotel for 110 pounds ($220). It was constructed partly of weatherboard and partly of vertical slabs and had a roof of shingles and a 53'6" long verandah. There were five rooms - the schoolroom 30ft x 20 ft, and four attached dwelling rooms. The site of two roods, lot 34, allotment 1, section 1, township of Hillsborough was bought for 12 twelve pounds. Approximately half the cost of establishing the school was subsidised by local residents. School No. 889 opened on 1st March 1868 the headteacher being John Besley 1868-1869, assisted Mr. Frank Vale. Early members of the local committee ! were Messrs. McGill, Morris, Michaelis, Smart, Rodgers, Dudley, McGill, Adams, Brown, Mitchell, Armstrong (William & Alex). In October 1882 the school bell from the closed S.S. No. 907 Sutton (Bruarong) was removed and re-erected at Hillsborough. District Inspector Rix in 1891 advised against the erection of a new building or removal to another site. Children enrolled were: STONE, James & Henry, CLINGIN, Wilfred, Percy & Walter, MITCHELL Henry & Mary, WATERSON, Mary, Martha, Violet & Agnes, CRAWFORD, William, Alfred, RALPH, William, Richard, Amelia, Wollesly, Gordon and Stanley
I would be interested in a copy of this Denise Kerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Denise" <denisem@powerup.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 01, 2004 4:23 PM Subject: [HC] Beechworth and district In June 1881, Hiram announced to a Council meeting that he was with the assistance of the Shire Secretary John W. Morton, preparing a history of Beechworth from the first discovery of gold up to the present time and it would be printed and distributed at Hiram's own expense. This work was done on the occasions of the International Exhibition and the census taken in April 1881. Attention to the resources and capabilities of the various districts of the Colony at the Exhibition, induced some Municipalities to issue pamphlets of a historical character. Hiram and John's book "A Historical Sketch of the Town of Beechworth and the District comprised within the United Shire of Beechworth" was such an endeavour from the introduction - "These productions are interesting and useful for, while they institute comparisons, they prevent from falling into oblivion names and events worthy of a more deserving fate. Those who enjoy the advantages flowing from settled institutions inaugurated by their predecessors should not allow such precedents and examples to be forgotten." I have a copy of this if anyone is interested. Many names mentioned, particularly in relation to council matters Denise

Ovens & Murray Advertiser 19th October 1972 Waterson - Tom In loving memory of our dear neighbour and friend passed away 12th October 1972. Sadly missed by Mary Lawson and Judith and Theo Bates and family. Ovens & Murray Advertiser 26th October 1972 Obituary Thomas Waterson A respected resident of Beechworth since 1934 Mr Thomas Waterson passed away at the Ovens District Hospital on 11th October. The late Mr. Waterson was born in Yackandandah 12th August 1895 and in his youth was engaged in mining pursuits in the district. In 1922 he married Irene Clarke of Beechworth at the Presbyterian church and she predeceased him in 1967. Their sons are Keith (Mt. Waverley) and Gordon (Malvern). After overseas service with the A.I.F. during WW1 during which he won the Military Medal Mr. Waterson resumed employment with the N.S.W. railways at Narrandera until 1934. He then commenced work at the Mental Hospital Beechworth initially on the nursing staff, but he subsequently transferred to the engineering side where he remained until his retirement in 1960. In the second world war he served with the A.M.F. within Australia for some time. He was a member of the R.S.L. for fifty years. The late Mr. Waterson was a staunch adherent of the Presbyterian Chur! ch which he served as an elder for many years. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, being Master in 1952. For most of his life he was a keen accomplished rifle shot, but in more recent years his sporting interest was in the Beechworth Bowling Club. He maintained an unobtrusive but effective interest in the community affairs generally throughout his residence in Beechworth. Following a service at the Uniting Parish Church on 13th October the funeral of Mr. Waterson proceeded to the Beechworth cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev. D. Lloyd and at the graveside Masonic and R.S.L services were also conducted by representatives of those organisations.
Yackandandah Times Another old and respected pioneer of the district has gone to his eternal reward, in the person of Mr Archibald Hays who died at his residence, Osbornes Flat on Saturday 26th November at the advanced age of eighty eight years. The late Mr Hays was born at Bangor, County Down, Ireland, came to Australia at the age of nineteen years making him a colonist of seventy years. On arrival at Osbornes Flat he engaged in mining having joined what was called the Tail Race Mining Party at the lower end of Osbornes Flat with whom he worked for many years. Subsequently retiring from mining he engaged in farming. The late Mr Hays never entered into public life, he was a man of most regular habits, was widely known and highly respected of amiable charitable disposition. His wife predeceased him by twenty four years. He leaves a family of six: three sons James of Moonee Ponds, William and Archibald of Osbornes Flat. Three daughters Jane (Mrs. H. Smith) of Tallandoon, Mary (Mrs. P. Ha! rper) Tallandoon and Alice who worked and ministered to the wants of a devoted father to the end. His remains were interred in the Yackandandah cemetery on Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large gathering of friends and sympathisers. The Rev. S.J.Hill (Presbyterian Church) officiated at the graveside.
Yackandandah Times March 1903 We regret to have to report the death of the wife of one of our old identities, viz, Mrs Archibald Hays of Osbornes Flat. The deceased had been ailing for some years but a strong constitution enabled her to live to the fairly ripe old age of sixty four. The deceased was a sister of Mrs James McCullough, Yackandandah, Mrs Waterson of Back Creek and Mrs McKibbin of Sutton and there are seven sons and daughters several of whom are married. Mr Hays is one of our most respected pioneers and he has the sympathy of the district at large in his bereavement. The funeral took place on Tuesday and was very largely attended. The Rev. J.H.Meek officiated at the grave and the mortuary arrangements were in the hands of McDermott and Hall. Death Notice HAYES On 9th March 1903 at her residence, Eliza Jane, wife of Archibald Hayes of Osbornes Flat. "So sadly missed, so deeply mourned."
Yackandandah Times October 7th 1921 Yackandandah Livery Stable W.Smith begs to announce that he has purchased the local branch of the old established firm of Crawford & Co. mail contractors and Livery and Bait (?) stables. He also wishes it to be known that he has secured the Beechworth mail contract for a further term. Coaches to suit convenience will leave Yackandandah each morning at 11 a.m. and Beechworth on the return journey at 3 p.m. Beechworth booking office at Mr. Smiths bootmaker.

Hi Zola, Could you tell me what timeframe it was for your mother at Edi school, and her maiden name, as I had several cousins attend this school. I didn't attend Edi, but Moyhu about 6 miles closer to Wangaratta.
