    3. I am hoping someone would have a Melbourne Directory for around the period 1888-1890. I really don't know if one exists or not, but I am hoping to locate the name Jenks, probably within the area of Richmond. Almina, (Mina) Jenks and son Henry Jenks were art teachers in the USA. They came here in 1888 and I am trying to find out if they continued with their teaching here. I have a copy of a flyer they put out in the States showing this joint teaching venture. regards Denise

    1. Beechworth Chinese Cultural Centre
    2. Peter Ross
    3. The opening of this yesterday was a huge success. And although I didn't get there until 2 hours after the opening, due to a dead car battery (grrrr), I very much enjoyed it once there. Got to speak with Dr Kok Hu Jin who launched his book Chinese Graves in the Beechworth Cemetery . Wonderful book too. Nice feller, has done a book on Yackandandah as well (not yet published) so have sent him what I have on Yack Cemetery Chinese graves. The Centre is a must for any visit to B/worth. It is in the 1850s building originally built to house the Chinese Protector, 2 buildings up from the Court House. Peter R

    1. McLean - McNeil
    2. Denise
    3. Looking for any connection to the family McNeil - Anna and 10 children arrived in 1852 - husband and 3 children died on voyage. Many of the family are missing from our tree. Once they landed we lost them! Anna the mother worked on a property near what is now Preston (Strathallan I think) and supposed owned by a cousin McLean. Does anyone know of these families? Anna McNeil aged 17 went to Albury to work in 1852. A few of the family found in the Yan Yean area. If you recognise any of this, then I'm happy to send more info on the 13 children! Denise

    3. Hi Kerry, I am sorry but I haven't noticed that name in the book, it is not indexed so hard to say exactly. It isn't a name I am familiar with, but then I am no expert either. I think the book is out of print but you may pick it up somewhere, my daughter found mine at a clearing sale in Castlemaine. Do you have connections with Benambra? Someone on the List may also be able to help you . 2. Dianne Carroll
    3. Hi Kerry, Thanks for the response. I am seeking any information on the current hut, which I believe replaced the original Culhane Homestead. I am trying to find out who lived there, when both (hut & homestead) were built. Dates that the property changed hands, and to who. Any snippets about the family of interest ....etc...etc... The more historical and cultural heritage I can get on these huts and their sites, the better it will be. My final report will become the research tool as part of the forthcoming management plan, so need to get as much as possible and as accurate as possible. 3. Hi Dianne My family as you know are Culhanes who are also related to the Maguires, (as in Maquire's track) Costello's (Kevin Costello the poet etc..) and we lived next door to the Higgin's, but I am not sure what you want to know, or what you are researching. Also for Culhane's and Higgins do you mean "house" or "hut" both these families houses were situated near the junction of the Crooked and Wongungarra rivers at Talbotville. There was a family called Flannigan that used to live in the house before Mick Higgins. We originally had three properties in the area, one of them Paddy Culhane sold to Nellie Gibbs (Guy) back in the early forties. Hope you like this one - I fall into several categories!!! Mary I'm Fine - How are you? There's nothing the matter with me, I'm just as healthy as can be, I have arthritis in both knees, And when I talk, I talk with a wheeze. My pulse is weak, my blood is thin, But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in. All my teeth have had to come out, And my diet I hate to think about. I'm overweight and I can't get thin, But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in. And arch supports I need for my feet. Or I wouldn't be able to go out in the street. Sleep is denied me night after night, But every morning I find I'm all right. My memory's failing, my head's in a spin. But I'm awfully well for the shape I'm in. Old age is golden I've heard it said, But sometimes I wonder, as I go to bed. With my ears in a drawer, my teeth in a cup, And my glasses on a shelf, until I get up. And when sleep dims my eyes, I say to myself, Is there anything else I should lay on the shelf? The reason I know my Youth has been spent, Is my get-up-and-go has got-up-and-went! But really I don't mind, when I think with a grin, Of all the places my get-up has been. I get up each morning and dust off my wits, Pick up the paper and read the obits. If my name is missing, I'm therefore not dead, So I eat a good breakfast and jump back into bed. The moral of this as the tale unfolds, Is that for you and me, who are growing old.
