    3. Dianne How soon do you need this info, as I will be down in Victoria over chrissy, have to see Ian Stapleton at Harrietville, and I think Walter Mortimer will be accompanying myself and parents for another trip to Wonnangatta so maybe I can catch up with you at Omeo. I am really concerned about the Talbotville cemetery being looked after (not just huts) as there has been vandalism there, could be from the campers. But the cross was broken off my G Grandfathers grave, thanks to one of the cattlemen returning it to my family. This cemetery is not registered and is open to anything that the government wants to do with it. they last told me they wanted it for tourism, and if the families didn't like the idea we could have the remains removed. This was back several years ago when I was with the Cattlemen's association. To me this is an important place as it contains the remains of some of the first pioneer families in that area. I am seeking any information on the current hut, which I believe replaced the original Culhane Homestead. I am trying to find out who lived there, when both (hut & homestead) were built. Dates that the property changed hands, and to who. Any snippets about the family of interest ....etc...etc... The more historical and cultural heritage I can get on these huts and their sites, the better it will be. My final report will become the research tool as part of the forthcoming management plan, so need to get as much as possible and as accurate as possible. 3. I'm looking for any Culhanes registered pror to 1866, I,m fairly sure that the early days connected to mining over Dargo way was under Beechworth, as when the miners made application for a License to Occupy Land under the 49th Sec of "The Land Act 1869". which is a lease under the Goldfields Residence and Cultivation Act, It had to go through Beechworth first before being sent back to Omeo. The Gippsland Mining District was established by the Governor-in-Council on 17 December 1866 under the provisions of The Mining Statute 1865. This was the seventh and final District to be established. The six original Districts were established in 1858. Crooked River wasn't even named when they were mining there before 1860. So not sure what area they called it. Also (big :-) re living here. Also started writing the book at long last :-) Kerry. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Denise" <denisem@powerup.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 02, 2004 7:09 PM Subject: Re: [HC] Mining Kerry, have a very small data base here, what are you looking for? 3. Hi Irene, Well it is a small world. We lived in Elp.for 20 years, went there in 1975 and loved it. We had some great times in that pub after cricket in the summer time . We would know lots of the same people I guess, some of the old ones have moved on but others are still there. I am researching the Metcalfe shire and doing the pubs at present. In one year the Shire issued 42 liquor licenses so how many 'pubs' could there have been in all those gold rush years. We think we may have found the site of the Four Mile Hotel near Tunnel Hill but difficult to prove. I am waiting to get some more maps for the area but they don't usually show the pubs. Nice to know there is another ex Elphinstone person out there. It was a popular watering hole for the locals as well as those travelling between Melb. and Bendigo. It was on the triangle between the highway and the tunroff to Chewton/Castlemaine. Some time after we left, the highway was changed and, so far as I know, cut the hotel off. There were only7 the pub, the general store and the railway station in our day.
