    3. Hi all, Further to my post last week re records of Chiltern schools. Apparently there were several schools in Chiltern and surrounds. Whilst records of one school are at the Athenaeum, the other records no longer exist I'm told. However, it may be worth trying if you are interested. Sadly my names did not appear so my mystery is not yet solved. Contact the friendly people at the Athenaeum. Denise

    3. Peter, I see that you have had no reply to your questions, so I will put in my vague information in case it assists. Catherine Hedley b C1835 d 1909 and buried Yack'. On the various birth certificates for 11 children, she gave her maiden name as Kennedy on some and Whiteford on others and named one of the younger ones William Whiteford Hedley. However, she told my grandmother, her grandd-in-law, who was interested in recording such things, that her maiden name was Delaney or Devaney and that is what was recorded until I started to check records. Catherine could not read or write and signed her name on the marriage certificate with a X but gave her maiden name as Whiteford - parents Ann Kennedy and Andrew Whiteford. I have not been able to find any records for these. Hope this is of some use. 3. Hi Mary. Thank you for this. I have a photo of the Salvation Army Hall if you want one - from Background to Beechworth. It is also in the Echoes of History book. The Neighbourhood Centre below is interesting. I am hoping a local will tell me what the red brick Church is NEXT to what was labelled the Methodist Church in books. So far I've not seen a photo of this with a title, in any book I have. There is a photo of it, but not what denomination. D. 3. Dear Denise, Below are précis notes I took on the Salvation Army Hall & the Wesleyan one a few months ago at the PRO. VPRS 7882/P1 605 SALVATION ARMY HALL, BEECHWORTH. FILE NO. 4237 starts on 22.1.1981 The Hall is situated in Ford Street, Beechworth Earliest correspondence is dated 30th June 1885 from James Flint 75 Exhibition St., Melbourne - Architect and Surveyor addressed to Central Board of Health outlining the plans although there are no drawings attached. A further letter dated 3.7.1885 is from W.Cupelwain discussing the details. Another from James Flint 18.9.1885 asking for application for a certificate giving consent for the opening of the new Salvation Army Barracks, Beechworth again to the Central Board of Health. Letter from Shire of Beechworth to Central board of Health complying with requirements Then a jump to 12.12.1921 from The Salvation Army Territorial headquarters to the Public Health Commission regarding proposed works to the hall i.e. a partition to make it two halls one for adults and one for young people. Then on 15th December 1921 a letter as above' stating because the building is very old and infested in parts with white ants they have decided to demolish and erect a new building using old material. They want the plan returned. On the 16th they then send plans and specifications. Copy of the plan on waterproof paper and in colour is attached. Documents relating to the building per requirements etc. Letter from Department to Army 9.1.1922 regarding inlet ventilators so the building is held in suspense. Letters re block plan which was then sent (copy on waterproof paper not coloured) Paid fee of 10/- Approved by council 11.2.1922 Electrical diagrams from Ian McGuffie Pty Ltd 25 Ford Street, Beechworth Electrical Contractor , dated 22.1.1981 for proposed re wiring. Letter regarding wiring from Electrical Inspector and approved. Then in 1985 further re electrical installation from McGuffie Approved in 24.1.1986. BEECHWORTH WESLEYAN SUNDAY SCHOOL Was originally erected in 1857 and was used until recently as Wesleyan Church. Brick walls except the north gable which is soft wood and lined inside with wood. Iron roof. Dado 4 feet round walls - ceiling covered with hessian and paper. This inspection was done on 22.8.1905 Lots of documents through to 1987 where is has been refurbished as a Neighbourhood Centre carried out by the council and Rotary to the tune of approximately $20,000. Original requirements dated 1982 have been carried out. 3. Hi Denise, I don't have Echoes of History. A few notes from BATF... P39 South east corner of Ford and Church - 1854 - Wesleyan (Meth?) P89 Six churches in Beechworth in late 19th century. Christ Church is the C of E - consecrated 1869 - has a spire. Wesleyan Methodist build brick chapel in 1857 - doesn't say where - but may be the one. Congregationalists - corner of Loch and Camp - red brick but spire never added Baptist and also used by Church of Christ - somewhere in upper Ford Street RC - St Josephs - not sure where but I don't think it's the one you are looking for Presbyterian - corner of Ford and William completed in 1858 and called St Andrews (this might be it?) Book says it was 'a stuccoed grey exterior with a slim tower and fine corner buttresses rising to pinnacles as three levels and surmounted by spires.....' I will be dining with my brother and sister-in-law tomorrow evening so I will see if they can remember which is which. Now, wait for it, I just looked up Background to Beechworth and it has photos of each of the churches - can you please describe in some detail???? 3. Hi Wendy, Thanks for this. If we start with this Vic Heritage Link and put in Beechworth http://ndoiext01.doi.vic.gov.au/doi/hvolr.nsf and look at the link for HO523 for Old Methodist Church a photo is available. This is opposite the C/E and next to the red brick Church I asked also about. If you have the book Echoes of History there is a photo on P118 of the two churches. I saw a sign outside the red brick church 3 years ago a child care centre (next to Methodist) which I thought said it was the Methodist or Wesleyan church. I need to know what denomination the red Church is or was if anyone can help. Have you been to southern NSW yet Wendy? Found anything out on the deaths in accident of your ggf/andggm? On the link above Wendy is mention of the London T. 3. Hi Denise, I think I am correct in saying that Christ church is the Anglican - CofE - church at the top of the street on the right hand side (if you come out of the Bakery to your left and then turn left into Ford........) Sorry I don't know in which direction we are going. There is another church across the road, I don't think it is RC but either Pres, Uniting or Meth. (This would be on the same side as Hiram's business). The CofE church used to be known as the United Church of England and Ireland. Back in 1856 it seems to have been known as the 'temporary church' according to a marriage registration I obtained. By the way, they have a historian there who will look up archived church records for a cost of around $25. She was very helpful in deciphering the maiden name of Robert Milne's first wife which was indecipherable on the certificate but infinitely readable on the original church entry. Not much help, but Cheers anyway, Wendy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Denise" <denisem@powerup.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, October 09, 2004 1:01 PM Subject: [HC] churches > Hoping someone can tell me where Christ Church is in Ford St. My memory is slipping. > > Also there is a church on the left as you head towards Wang in Ford St as you have gone over Church St.. Anyone know which denomination it is please? Red brick building which I think now is a child care centre. It is opposite the C/E which is on Cnr Church and Ford. I need to separate these two churches in my research. Thanks Denise

    3. Families pad up to relive legend (By Genevieve Barlow) 'They battled for 2½ days, made a world record partnership of 641 that stood for 74 years and put Buffalo River in the history books. A year later, 27 year old school teacher Tom Patton went to fight at Gallipoli and never returned. His partner in cricketing fame, 37 year old farmer Norm Rippon, lived to be an old man. On October 31, descendants of these country cricketers will return to the same ground, near Myrtleford, don the whites and re-enact the 1914 Buffalo River versus Whorouly match. Though the record score is part of local cricket lore, time and tide threatened to bury it, re-enactment organiser Roger Johnson said. Roger, who grows trees commercially in the Buffalo River valley, says he learned of the record just this year. When Lake Buffalo was built in the valley in the 1960s, 70% of the community was forced to leave, leaving fewer people to recall stories, he said. "I've lived in this valley 50 years and I only read about the record about five months ago," Roger said. Patton's 408 run contribution, believed to be a record for the highest individual score in A Grade country cricket, and the man himself, remain a fascination for his family's descendants. Tom Patton's nephew, named after his legend-making uncle, said his own children and grandchildren will travel from around Australia to watch or play in the October 31 match. "It's been a big thing for the Patton family," said Tom, 75, who lives at Wagga Wagga. Among them is Steve Taylor, a great nephew so fascinated by Tom Patton that he wrote a history thesis on his life as a school teacher, cricketer and Gallipoli soldier. "Tom was obviously a very talented and gifted person,' Steve said. "We still have the diary he kept at Gallipoli and the hat he wore at that cricket match." The re-enactment - part of Myrtleford's 150th anniversary celebrations - will be played at the Gapsted oval, west of Myrtleford. Organisers hope spectators will wear early 20th century garb and turn up in horse-drawn buggies and vintage cars. And, as happened in the original game, the losing team will host a barbecue afterwards.'
