Seems you have covered all bases Jackie - but is it possible to search just using the date on the cemetry database? Try several dates that are just after the date of death and see if you come up with any that might be her - a spelling variant, familiar first names and so on. Also check the Sun newspaper as it was then - maybe there will be a death notice that gives the place of the funeral and burial. The only other thing I can suggest is look at the entries a couple each side of her death entry in the registers - and see if the database there has been mucked up - eg the details of the burial of B have been "moved up" as if in a spreadsheet to be alongside A's name. Not sure if that can be done by you or if you will have to nicely persuade the people at BDMs. Good luck - I will be interested if you find where she is and how she got "lost". Elizabeth BECHT died 8 July 1942 in Brunswick. According to her death certificate, the burial was registered at Fawkner Cemetery on 9th July. I checked the Cemetery online....she isn't there. Neither is her husband who died in 1963. I decided to phone Fawkner. I've had some wonderful assistance from a lady there. She's checked the database and even went through the old burial register books. She couldn't find any reference even checking variations of spelling of the surname and transposed surnames ie: mother's maiden name, her maiden name etc... She even phoned the mob that have taken over the Funeral Directors and there is no burial registered for Elizabeth BECHT. I've checked Preston General Cemetery, the Necropolis and any others I could find online to no avail. I'm about to phone Melbourne General Cemetery....it's the only other thing I can think of. Does anyone else have any suggestions ??? Jackie QLD

Yes please Merren that would be wonderful especially for Ruby's family researcher down the Sutherland line. Although she doesn't belong to this list, she is always amazed at what we can dig up from time to time. Wasn't this the publican who tried to change the name of Tanswells? Jackie http://heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,11174710%5E2862,00.htm l From today's Herald Sun. Historic town fights against Pokies Danny Buttler 25oct04 A SHOWDOWN is looming as the quiet Victorian town of Beechworth fights to remain pokies free. An application by local publican Chris Chriscoll for a gaming licence has galvanised a community that drew on people-power to crush an attempt to introduce one-armed bandits in 2000. Community groups, council and business leaders fear pokies would threaten their town's economy. And their planned fight-back coincides with church calls for the Federal Government to step in to remove ATMs from pokie dens. The Uniting Church and Inter-Church Gambling Task Force said the Government could use its banking powers to stop independent operators from moving in when big banks had removed their ATMs from the venues. In Beechworth, historically associated with bushranger Ned Kelly, locals fear the impact of the one-armed bandits. Vic Issell, who helped organise the 2000 campaign, said the community had already sent a clear message to gaming operators that they should stay out of town. Mr Chriscoll's application to the Victorian Casino and Gaming Authority is not for a specific venue. But locals fear it is the first step towards bringing pokies into the historic gold-mining township. "It is a surprise that they would wish to apply again, it's clearly against the community's wishes," Mr Issell said. "If they apply for the venue to be in Beechworth, there would be very large opposition to that application. "I don't want to speak for everyone else, but if people were opposed to a hotel installing them, then they might chose not to go there." Hotelier Mr Chriscoll said he was merely renewing an existing venue operators licence and had no desire to share any more information with the local community. "There's nothing to say, I'm just not prepared to educate these people," he said. The VCGA said Mr Chriscoll faces a probity check to see if he was of fit character to hold a licence. Only then could he apply to install machines in a specific venue. The local member for Benambra, Tony Plowman, warned that anyone who tried to bring pokies into town would be wasting their time and money. "They'll never come to Beechworth, the community doesn't want them," he said. "To my mind it would destroy the whole tenor of what this town stands for, it's a tourist town built on history and heritage. Pokies have no part of that." Indigo Shire mayor Bill Hotson, who presides over one of a handful of pokies-free municipalities in Victoria, said the area was lucky to have missed out on the electronic gambling boom. Cr Hotson said poker machines were available just 25 minutes away from Beechworth. Federal Family and Community Services Minister Kay Patterson has asked banks to trial a range of restrictions to make it harder for problem gamblers to access money at gaming venues.
Chris Oh woman in our hour of loss Uncertain, coy & hard to please But when toil & trouble vex & try A ministering angel art thou James H. Ross 6-8-10 I believe this is James Ross born 1884 in Hillsborough died (I have been told) 1956; son of David Ross & Mary Ann Welshman (Annie's aunt on her father's side). He was Annie Welshman's first cousin. He would have been 26 when he wrote this May thy life be all sunshine Unclouded thy skies And round thy sweet presence All happiness rise Myrtle Meurant Yackandandah July 23, 1910 I believe she was a friend of Annie's. I only have one Meurant on my tree, obviously out of discussions with you as she is Selina married to Conrad Klippel. Be interested to know where she fits in. Wandiligong via Bright My Dear Mrs Blewett and family Words cannot express my sympathy and sorrow for you in this your hour of deep sorrow. I know just what you are all going through, but you must try and think that it is for the best. I know how we will all miss poor Jean, but it would be hard to wish her back, if her life was to be one of suffering. I hope you are keeping better, and may God give you all strength to bear your heavy trials. With love and sympathy from Alice P.S. I would very much like to take Aggie home with me in September, because I think the change would do her good - poor Aggie I'm afraid the shock will be too much for her. I hope to see you all next week.

Letter from Mary Ashford (schoolteacher who had boarded with the Blewett family at Bruarong) to Blewett family after the death of Jean Blewett in 1922 Eldorado 12-9-1922 Dear Everyone, It is with a heart most full of deepest sympathy that I write this letter to you tonight. Perhaps you have though me unkind in not writing sooner, but is was only on Sunday last that I heard of little Jean's death. With a girl friend I was visiting Miss Conner's people's place, and when they told me, I got such a shock. I cannot put into words all that I would like to say, but I know you will accept my deepest sympathy. I know no words of mine can lessen your load of sorrow, but I would be wanting in the ways of friendship if I didn't say how keenly I feel for you all. God, who does all things for the best, has taken your dear one from you and keen as the loss is,do not wish her back, for her sufferings are now over. I will not say "Don't grieve" - but for one another's sake try and bear it bravely. Parting with our loved ones, is, I think, the hardest cross God calls on us to bear, so as all things depend on Him, we must try and say "Not our will, but thine Lord be done." Dear little Jean! she was such a gently little girl, and as one of my old pupils I will always retain fond memories of her. I would so much like a picture of her is you have a spare one. Mother! I am so sorry to know that you are so poorly in health, but I trust you are feeling better as the circumstances will allow. Dear friends, for the present, I will not write any more, but will say Goodnight. God bless you all. Much love from Yours ever sincerely Mary E. Ashford Will write again next week. Names in letter: Everyone: William Blewett and his wife, Alice nee Waterson, John Blewett and his wife Emily Murray, Violet Blewett, Allie Blewett, Aggie Blewett Miss Conner: Alice Conner, Bruarong school teacher in 1922, who came from Eldorado. Mary E. Ashford: Mary Ashford came from Allans Flat, and taught at Bruarong 1912 - 1915 approx.
