Hello Denise, I have a book called " Place Nmaes of Australia: By A.W.Reed, if you send me the list of names, will try and send you the meanings if they are in the book. They will be coming to Beechworth in March - no worries with this town - but I would like some assistance as to how towns got their names. e.g. Yackandandah Stanley Albury Wodonga Wagga Wagga Wangaratta Chiltern and so forth into NSW and up to Qld where I'll be driving these Americans with help of my family. These I can source by other means as they are out of the area of this list. I guess I"m going to try to explain to my guests as I go, the meaning of towns, and a little history behind each area. Got to fill up two days driving with something. Anyway help me please? Denise
Thank you Joan that's great. They will be going thru Wangaratta having trained up from Melbourne and coaching to B/worth (wrong sort of coach tho sadly) D ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joan" <joanmck@cv.quik.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 04, 2004 9:30 PM Subject: Re: [HC] Meaning of town names > Hi Denise, > Wangaratta, Aboriginal, meaning Cormorants rest, was the > name > of Faithful's > home on the Oxley Plains. > Cheers Ray. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Denise <denisem@powerup.com.au> > To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Thursday, November 04, 2004 9:42 PM > Subject: [HC] Meaning of town names > > >> Next year I am playing 'tour guide in a small way to a small group of > Americans. I was almost going to send this privately but thought it may be interesting to others on the list to see names of places and their meanings. So Kerry if you don't mind a list of a dozen and half names, that would be great. Excuse me as I cross the border into NSW out of the area of this list. I am hoping this route home to Brisbane will give the Americans a good x-section of NSW country. Ideas gratefully accepted, except sorry no time for photos of cemeteries (g) unless you can give a good reason to convince my husband we need to stop at a grave and gather around with the Americans for a photo shoot. Maybe we could play it up that this is an all time famous bushranger or something. For those interested in the fate of the jail... A Melb based property developer is the new owner of the Beechworth jail, with plans to develop the historic site into an upmarket tourist attraction. Plans to turn part of the prison yard into an open air market for local produce, historic warden's quarters and admin block would be transformed into upmarket tourist accommodation. Other buildings developed into conference facilities. Interior - 100 individual cells used as wine cellars for premium wine in the region as well as providing retail space for wine sales and a restaurant. Construction begins next year, & be completed in early 2006. Plans to go before Indigo council & all work undertaken under the supervision of Heritage Victoria. "The plans were submitted to Heritage Victoria to ensure the integrity of the building was maintained and the jail would remain intact." Chris

Hi Denise, That could be a posability, as virtually every generation had at least one Zadok, some generations had up to four, that I have found. Thanks for the info. Cheers Ray. ----- Original Message ----- From: Denise <denisem@powerup.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 2004 12:12 PM Subject: [HC] Zadock Porter > Hi Ray, > I've found a marriage of a Zadock Porter and a Sally in Massachusetts USA in 1789 - yours? > Denise > >

But it gets worse if you live in Melbourne, I worked on Monday, deputising for a staff member who took a long weekend. It was like driving to the office early on a Sunday morning, there was NO ONE about, the lunch shops in a fairly large industrial area were closed, one could walk into the Post Office and be served immediately, likewise at the bank. Perhaps we could start a movement to "Stop the Nation" for a few minutes reflection on Anza Day. All the best, Zola
