Hello Bev and other interested members, I am also here and thought the list had gone quiet due to a member complaining about the chat that was not necessarily on family history. In my opinion part of this wonderful list was (is) the companionship and helpfulness of the list, everyone appears to encourage when one's searching begins to appear nigh on impossible. Keep up the good work everyone. Zola Researching : Pearce (Pierce), Barter, Beach (Betsch) Mahoney, Hart, Woolner, all in the high country area, plus the following Henderson, Mack, Addison, Freeman, Gracie, Nielson. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bev Walker" <bbwalker@vic.chariot.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 11, 2004 9:11 AM Subject: RE: [HC] no messages > Hi Denise, > I too am here, most of the time, plugging away at breaking > down all the brick walls my ancestors appear to have built > around themselves. Hi everyone, I would suggest to everyone that they go through the BDM certificates they have and submit the details to the AVNE list support page. I have submitted most of mine to this list, and as a result am contacted occasionally by researchers asking for information. It is rewarding being able to help others, but the information I have received back from the other researchers has been amazing. Example: I listed the spare deaths on my great grandfather's death cert. (William Blewett, Bruarong, 1930). Another researcher contacted me regarding another death on the same cert. (O'Callaghan, Mudgegonga). It so happened that the researcher's mother had married an O'Callaghan, who she met while she was a young school teacher at Bruarong. While she was at Bruarong it turned out she boarded with the Blewett family. I was then able to find mentions of this teacher in an old letter written by Alice Blewett. The researcher then hunted out an old unnamed photo of school children outside a school and had a copy done for me - we wondered if it could be Bruarong. I sent a copy to my mother's cousin, who is 81, and he was able to name all the pupils in the photo. As I am working on a history of the Bruarong school, this was a big bonus for me - all because someone contacted me for a 'spare' death! Ronda
Hi Denise, I too am here, most of the time, plugging away at breaking down all the brick walls my ancestors appear to have built around themselves. They must have had a lot to hide. The Americans are the easiest for me, the history has been well documented in America but once they came here it has been harder to find. Most of my rellies were in the High Country around Omeo and involved in farming and goldmining. They were Sloan, Walter. Born USA. Forsyth, Helen, borm Scotland, married the above Walter. Many of the Forsyths were in the gold business and some were lucky. Forsyths were also prominent in Bright and all around that area. There is another branch of the Sloan family who were pioneers in that area, Isaac Sloan. So anything about Sloan, Forsyth families and their activities are of particular interest to me. I have just found, for the information of Sloan's on the list, the place where Grant Sloan died in South Africa in 1909. Thanks to Max Dyer, and his constant search for historical events, that I now have this info and hopefully follow it through to get a death certificate, and burial place. I have a lovely photo of his grave but there is not shred of evidence to suggest where it is. My dream would be realized if that were possible. ANY HELP with the difficult South Africa records would be most helpful. I too miss the friendly chat and banter on the List, also the information and the generosity of the Listers. It was always nice to get up and see a long list of emails waiting to be read. We all have other business to attend to and it is not so easy to make the time stretch to get everything in now days. I am sure that my advancing years also hold me back!!!!! Best wishes to all, Bev. -----Original Message----- From: Denise [mailto:denisem@powerup.com.au] Sent: Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:29 AM To: AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HC] no messages Richard - the list has been so quiet these past months, I wonder if any of the regulars are still members. Hi Denise, Bev and everyone, I'm still here too, I've had a busy year, with work and family and have done what I can to keep up with the list if not contribute a great deal. I've had to set up a new email address in the last month after the old one simply died, with seemingly no possibility of resurrection. My main interest is in Michael O'Donnell and Margaret (nee Ryan, and sister of Mary Milne, of Wendy's Milne's) initially in Beechworth and later at Meriang near Myrtleford and in their children The children who married locally were married to: CARROLL, John Bernard (would love to find more about this one) LARKAN, George (son of Semour Larkan, at the time Police Sgt at Bright) PUZEY, Letitia GLASS, Flrora Augusta Larkan, Puzey and Glass are well traced but any bits of info are always gratefully received. I have 'lost' : Amy Theresa O'DONNELL (born Myrtleford, 1871) and Reginald Patrick O'DONNELL (born Myrtleford, 1873). If someone has either of them hidden away in their tree I would LOVE to hear from you. BEV - One of the O'Donnell girls - Julia who married George LARKAN, died in South Africa after they migrated to join the LARKAN family settled there. I don't know where or when which if find both sad and frustrating. I too have found the task of getting info on South Africa pretty much impossible so far and parked the task in the 'too hard' basket for the moment, I feel so much better knowing I'm not the only one!! My dream would be realized if that >were possible. ANY HELP with the difficult South Africa records >would be most helpful. > _________________________________________________________________ It's fast, it's easy and it's free. Thanks Kerry, They are all the correct family - Jane Thompson who married Robert Currie is James Thompson's sister, so it gets a bit confusing with a wife Jane and a sister Jane. Hi, I am hoping someone with the marriage index will have time to do a look up for me. William Thompson (of Eldorado) presumably married Mary Ann Neligan (of Eldorado) in October 1898, according to the birth certificate of their daughter, May Thompson, who was born 8th December 1898. The writing on the birth cert. for May Thompson is difficult to read, but it looks like Mary Ann was only 15 yrs old when May was born (William was 28).
