    1. Hillsborough - Stone
    2. Ronda Shambrook
    3. Hi Wendy, It looks like Brainerd Stone helped my great grandfather (William Blewett) brew the tea.... Ovens & Murray Advertiser, March 7, 1891 Hillsborough State School Picnic (by Surmisor) Of course I went to Hillsborough, and, as a natural sequence, had a good time in that charming city of the hills. One gets into an entirely different atmosphere, both geographically and socially, in that altitude. The various sports, the results of which I append, seemed to please the numerous visitors from Stanley, Yackandandah, and other hamlets in the vicinity. The lady secretary (Miss Madge Kelly) was eminently efficient. The tables were attended to by Misses Folster, McKibbon, Michell, Ralph, McGowan and Waterson: Messrs Stone and Blewitt brewing the tea. Dancing was indulged in up to "wee sma' hoors," in the schoolroom, Mr. Chas. Harridge officiating as M.C., and Mr Thomas Nicholl supplying the music. Messrs Tresize and Michell favored the company with various vocal selections, which were well received. A long list of results follows, including the following names: Clingin, Wilberforce, Mummery, Folster, Johnston, Thomas, Jannon, Priestly, Burns, Buckley, Lee, McGowan, Crawford, Tresize, Waterson, Bigelow, Kinchington, Bruestdt, Stone, Ralph, Mongan. The judges were Messrs Clingin, McGowan and Martin, and the handicappers Messrs A. Stone, W. Waterson and R.McGowan.

    3. Hillsborough Picnic 1893 Yackandandah Times May 6th 1893 Hillsborough The annual picnic and ball in aid of the prize fund of the Hillsborough State School took place on Friday, 21st April There was an excellent attendance, visitors being present from all parts of the surrounding district, including Yackandandah and Stanley. During the afternoon all kinds of games were indulged in, whilst the school children were also studied in regard to races. Altogether a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. In the evening a dance was held at the state school, when there was again a good attendance. At midnight refreshments were served out, and dancing was afterwards resumed, being kept up till daylight. Mr Nichol of Allans Flat supplied the music, and Mr Harridge of Stanley acted as M.C. The head teacher, Miss Waterson, of course had the lion's share of the work in getting up the picnic and ball, but she was ably backed up by the following ladies:- Mrs Waterson, Miss Stone, Miss McKibbon, Miss Ralph, Miss Crawford, and Miss McGowan.

    3. One of the drivers on this coach service you speak of was Charles D Ferguson, American. Charles had an interesting life in Australia (and briefly in NZ) before returning to the US many years later to visit his sister. He planned to return to Australia, but death got in the way. Hiram was once interviewed and spoke of Charles D working for him in the very early days of coaching. Charles has not mentioned Crawford and Co in his book, in fact mentions Cobb & Co. (who doesn't!!!!) but does mention driving coaches on the highway to Albury - Hiram was servicing this route late 1850s-1860s. And of course H had a route running under one of the Cobb banners. Another case of 'Hoover the carpet' don't worry about any other brands of vacuum cleaners, just use the most common name! This is one of my annoyances; Cobb & Co. is reported in so many stories and books and papers, when in fact it was some other company running that particular route. There are people researching coaching industry in relation to their own ancestor, and have been led to believe they drove or owned Cobb & Co. This had made it difficult for them to sort through, simply because in many instances their ancestor's name is not mentioned, only Cobb (the banner). A lot is attributed to Freeman Cobb and although whilst here he made money and opened up a great industry, he wasn't in Aust. for more than 3 or 4 years, it was the name that was perpetuated by many other men with their own lines after he left. Freeman returned to Massachusetts, became a Senator, married his cousin, moved to South Africa and started up yet another Cobb & Co. and died there, without looking it up again, about 1878 . The coaching industry continued on for a long time after Freeman left, and in fact in the northeast Victoria and southern NSW, Crawford & Co. continued for another 64 years. Better get off my box! 3. Have a book written by an American who once worked in Beechworth and then brought his travelling show thru the town. He came to Aust mining, took on other jobs and at one point went over to what he called "the middle Island of New Zealand". Gold was found by Gabriel Read at Tuapeka Otago Province in May 1861. He speaks of Otago, Gabriel's Gully, Golden Age Hotel with old Victorian Harry Richmond who left Aust after going thru the Insolvent Court Victoria. The fields weren't according to the author at all successful, not even one in ten had their expectations realized. Names - Charles Carlos Cole and Henry Hoyt - formed Cole Hoyt & Co. (coaches) - both Americans from Victoria. The author then left for Arrow river 50 miles from Dunstan. Not much for you, but just in case the names crop up in the tree - Denise ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kerry" <kerryb@austarnet.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 13, 2004 12:21 AM Subject: Re: [HC] no messages > Hi Wendy > > In about 1861 the word was out on the Otago gold rush had started in May. > And Cobb & Co had started a coach service between Dunedin and Gabriel's > Gully (Otago Goldfield). 3. Hi Ronda, After enjoying all of the emails in past months about the Hillsborough episodes I never linked my Maria - I've never known who her parents were. So thanks very much for setting me straight on this one. (Still can't find her birth on the index under either STONE or NOONAN) but Brainerd and 'big' Maria didn't marry until 1888 so she was born beforehand. Richard MILNE was my g-grandfather's brother so I guess 'little' Maria must have been some sort of a g-aunt... I tracked Maria and Richard to Boulder WA where in 1905 it seems they had twins, a boy (Arthur Herbert) and a girl (Mary Evelyn). The boy died in the same year but the daughter grew up and married I think. I've not yet found the deaths of Maria or Richard. No, I don't have the obit for Brainerd. 3. Hi Ronda, I've seen Edward Kelly and Joshua Bigelow take out numerous mining claims over the years, however there doesn't appear to be much information on the fellow. Can you shed any light on Kelly? Glad your uncle liked the photo's, and at some point I'll need to investigate the locality of Hillsborough and Bruarong further. I am interested to try and find the tramway that ran between the Homeward Bound mine and the crushing mill, apparently you can still see the ditch that it ran along. 3. Hi Wendy In about 1861 the word was out on the Otago gold rush had started in May. And Cobb & Co had started a coach service between Dunedin and Gabriel's Gully (Otago Goldfield). Although the Herald January 28th 1862 stated that; 'A batch of New Zealand diggers returned to Gipps Land last week and reported they can do better at the Crooked river, than at Gabriel's Gully or at any of the diggings in that neighbourhood' I know a lot left Crooked River for this rush, not sure if many also went from Beechworth, I have found ones from Castlemaine also leaving for N.Zealand. The funeral took place on Monday and was largely attended. Mr Stone had been in the district since the early settlement, in fact he is credited with having sunk the first hole along the Yackandandah Creek. He had been a resident of Hillsborough thirty years having been engaged most of the time with reefing. He was 68 years of age at the time of his death and leaves a family, mostly grown up.
