    3. Hi Bev, Yes, I've had various emails over the years from places like Nigeria and the Ivory Coast wanting my bank account details, etc. They pop up every now and then. The worst ones at the moment seem to be the 'drug' web sites wanting to sell cheap tablets, etc. I have cut my junk mail by around 90 percent or even more - my provider provides a free service and they automatically dump most of the junk into a special mailbox where it stays for two weeks so that you can check it if you want to. I didn't have to say what had to be dumped like some software systems do - they just seem to be able to identify most of it somehow. It's great as I only receive a handful of rubbish a week instead of truckloads and I never bother to check any more. I imagine more network providers will provide this type of service in the future so it might pay you to check with yours. 3. Bev - I have three email addresses. I get hundreds of spam per day, it is pest, but not much to do about it,, except changing email addresses - but this only works until you have used your new one on the net for a while. However, if changing your email address you lose the chance of someone finding you if you have left a message somewhere eg the archives of this list. I have an old one - must be 5 years old and it has only spam on it. However, once every couple of months I find a letter from someone, and most of these have been so great a new family, new cousin, new connection, I can't possibly cancel this address. I have one which gets no spam - that is my Google mail address. I am always getting the opportunity to invite 6 friends to gmail - let me know OFF LIST if you want a free email address. It's a new concept, but pretty good. regards Denise > Goodmorning All. > > Just turned on the PC and once again there is the email, > from the Ivory Coast this time, wanting me to take money > etc. Obviously all a scam, but I wonder do any of you get > it as well. The various sports, the results of which I append, seemed to please the numerous visitors from Stanley, Yackandandah, and other hamlets in the vicinity. The lady secretary (Miss Madge Kelly) was eminently efficient. The tables were attended to by Misses Folster, McKibbon, Michell, Ralph, McGowan and Waterson: Messrs Stone and Blewitt brewing the tea. Dancing was indulged in up to "wee sma' hoors," in the schoolroom, Mr. Chas. Harridge officiating as M.C., and Mr Thomas Nicholl supplying the music. Messrs Tresize and Michell favored the company with various vocal selections, which were well received. > > A long list of results follows, including the following names: > Clingin, Wilberforce, Mummery, Folster, Johnston, Thomas, Jannon, Priestly, Burns, Buckley, Lee, McGowan, Crawford, Tresize, Waterson, Bigelow, Kinchington, Bruestdt, Stone, Ralph, Mongan. > > The judges were Messrs Clingin, McGowan and Martin, and the handicappers Messrs A. 3. Hi Denise, "Peculiar Accident" Yarrawonga Mercury, 15/8/1889 On Tuesday afternoon a peculiar accident, entailing the loss of a valuable coach horse, occurred at the lagoon at the foot of Belmore Street. On the arrival of Crawford &Co's Cobram coach, the driver repaired to the lagoon for the purpose of washing the vehicle, and in doing so,drove into one of the deep holes in which the lagoon abounds, with the result that, before a rescue could be effected, one of the pair of horses was lost, the other animal, with difficulty, being rescued by Mr OWENS groom. Made sure the fires didn't get that one didn't he. 3. Ray, what a find - this is fantastic thank you. The night just gets better! I've lots of information indicating where the coaches went etc. along the Murray westwards - initially right to Echuca, but later only as far as Corowa, but I haven't had a Yarrawonga snippet - and to boot a new staff member! Fancy washing the coaches ! THANK YOU, I'm having a great night. I've just found a missing family - one of Hiram's sisters. Through a letter dated 1886 written by a Pastor in New Hampshire to "Madam" (unknown, but have a good idea who she was) I've managed to locate Hiram's nieces also with the help of the 1880 Census. A letter, a town, two names, and the census gave me what I didn't have these past 6 years. This was the only sibling of Hiram's that I didn't have information for. Yahhooo. 3. "A destructive fire broke out last Sunday, in the Koetong Hotel, formerly occupied by Mr. Osmond, but of which Mr. John Mildren had lately become the licensee. Shortly after 2 o'clock on Sun morning, flames were observed issuing from the hotel, & in spite of all that could be done to quench the conflagration, the building, with its contents, was in a very short time, burned to the ground, all but one room being consumed. The inmates were unable to save anything so rapid was the progress of the fire, and they were only just able to escape with little more than the clothes they stood in. The horses belonging to Messrs. CRAWFORD AND CONLEY, which were in a stable at the back were got out, but were fortunately uninjured. The stables were saved. It is not known how the fire originated, but it is conjectured that it must have proceeded from a candle left burning in one of the bedrooms. General sympathy is expressed for Mr. & Mrs. Mildren, who, we understand, were uninsured, and who have thus lost heavily by the fire. We believe it is Mr. Mildren's intention to supply what accomodation he can for travellers by the coach, in the room left standing, until the completion of the new edifice, which we are informed is to be erected without delay, on the site of the old hotel." He came to Aust mining, took on other jobs and at one point went over to what he called "the middle Island of New Zealand". Gold was found by Gabriel Read at Tuapeka Otago Province in May 1861. He speaks of Otago, Gabriel's Gully, Golden Age Hotel with old Victorian Harry Richmond who left Aust after going thru the Insolvent Court Victoria. The fields weren't according to the author at all successful, not even one in ten had their expectations realized. Names - Charles Carlos Cole and Henry Hoyt - formed Cole Hoyt & Co. 2. Eric and Judy Douthie
    3. Hi Jenny, Yes, everyone would like me to list those hostages, but for the time being I will keep them to myself. It has taken me over two years of hard work to find their names. James Reardon was the one who counted 62 hostages but the question is who did he count? Did he count the 25 odd children, the two babies in arms or just the boys and men. One of those I am having a hard time finding any information on is one in my own family, Catherine Curnow, the sister of Thomas Curnow and the owner of the red llama scarf. Catherine went to Tasmania and married a man by the name of John Trudgeon in 1882 then had a family of six children. I have found one descendant but no one seems to know anything of Catherine. I would also like to find something more on John Stanistreet and his family. I am also interested in everyones thoughts and views or anyone who is a descendant of anyone involved in the siege I would love to talk to you.
