Thats great Denise Its the same Ellen that worked for THE COMPANY :-) I haven't researched here yet can't seem to get out of Crooked River/Dargo at the moment. What I have been doing is finding where all the Diggers came from, what groups they formed (usually they were brothers or in-laws etc) and where they ended up settling, I can nearly safely say that at least 80% of the High Country people (Bogong, Harrietville, Dargo, Omeo, Benambra etc..) came from the Crooked River Diggings, some came via Beechworth, some Buckland others Bendigo. There is a group of Americans that have come from Yackandandah Beechworth area and were nearly the first on the diggings except for the Omeo Benambra mob, They even called their reef The New American Reef. Also I found another from the States but not sure if its him or his wife from the US, his name is Samuel Riley married to Jane Huges, they travelled over from Osborne Flat with the Nelson Hubbert and Mary McKinnon party. It would be interesting to find out about the Smith family and if they were related to Oliver Smith. The other Smiths I have, have come from Gipps and Melb Although I hate researching the name Smith, I feel sorry for anyone that has this as their surname re genealogy. Is anyone doing Tallangatta area, I am after would appreciate anything on the Kirks of this area. Some info Edward Kirk born Kilkenny Ireland, arrived Williamstown May 1872 where he went to join his sister Mary at Crooked river, and his sister Catherine at Dargo Flat. After spending seven years at the diggings he was very successful. Then went to Maffra where he bought 320 acres, rented 3000 acres and became a registered grazier. In 1883 he married Mary Ann O'Sullivan, then sold the 3000 acres in 1887 and bought a hotel and 1000 acres at Bullwah near Tallangatta, while still owning the 320 acres near Maffra Sale. From the Ovens & Murray Advertiser STONE - On the 24th inst., at his residence Hillsborough, after a long and painful illness, Brainard Heber Stone, aged 68 years. A colonist of 43 years. ONE MORE TO THE MAJORITY Death have removed another of those who have been so long connected with the district as to have become recognised as part and parcel of it. After a lengthened illness of a more or less severe character which has extended over several years, MR Brainard Stone, of Hillsborough, passed peacefully away on Sunday last in the presence of is wife and family. Mr. Stone was amongst the earliest of those who found their way to the Ovens diggings when mining was in it preliminary stages, and after working on Spring Creek and the 9 Mile, he made his way to Yackandandah, and was amongst the very first to prove that gold was to be found there. Some years ago impelled by the old enterprising spirit, he removed to Hillsborough and settled there with his wife and family. Latterly he has suffered from a severe affection of the ear and head and tis eventually led to his death. Whilst resident in the neighborhood of Beechworth Mr Stone was one of the first to join the Oddfellows Lodge upon its establishment and he never severed his connected with it. He was a full benefit member at the time of his death and during his long and painful illness he had a very convincing proof of the advantages to be derived from his membership. The funeral took place on Monday and many of his brethren of the Beechworth Lodge regretted exceedingly that they did not hear of the event till it was too late for them to show by their attendance that they respected the deceased and deeply sympathised with his wife and family. If notice had been given many of the members of the Local Beechworth Lodge would have followed the remains of their deceased brother to the grave.
Wendy, Amelia Stone (sister of Maria) gets a mention in this one. Mrs Anderson's letter is to the inspector, Mr. Rix. Mr Jamieson taught at Hillsborough before Mrs. Anderson. Ronda Hillsborough 889 May 18th 1885 H.Rix Esq Sir, I beg to state that in accordance with my promise I forward an Exercise book which you may or may not have seen at the Show and I regret that the other, E.Knight's has been lost in Beechworth somewhere. However sincerely read you this, to prove that I must have been at some little trouble with this boy, J.Ralph who is now being sent to the Stanley School and you know whether or not they have better exercises there for children 12 years old. I also enclose extracts from two of Mr Jamieson's letters although I suppose my case has quite been disposed of, ere this, but it will convince you that, during the short time he was here, only 3 months, he was so annoyed by the parents that he said he feared they would bring some very serious charge against him and swear black and white that is, as they have done with me - I have only received a reply from one of the girls I had last year, but, believe Amelia Stone will really write the truth if she gets my letter before one from home - I presume I need not get a statement from Louisa Braidwood as she was only with me from the Holidays till the end of February in this year, when her father needed her at Deaderang and according to the e! vidence (which by the way I believe likelous enough) all the trouble was either last year when I had women for servants, and since Easter when Violet has been at Castlemaine. Mr Jamieson had a way of calling them -- 'Paulina' means Mrs Paul and 'The Workmistress' means Mr. T.Michell, because he boasts of his abilities in Needlework, washing, baking and in short he is THE HILLSBOROUGH KING. My little Violet was born at the Goldie School in March 1882 which can very easily be proved if you doubt it by referring to the school rolls where as in this case the school was closed. I have the honor to be Sir Your obedient servant E.Anderson P.S. I only got the exercise book back today. Mapping had not been taught here until I came.

Hi Irene, Thanks, it is a nuisance isn't it, I just wondered about all this money stuff. It is obviously such a scam but they keep it up. Irene, was it you who told me that you used to run the Elphinstone Pub. If it was do you mind telling me what the years were and your name. I am still researching the hotels in Elp. and I have quite a few names for the Commercial Hotel now the Elphinstone. I was down there a couple of months ago and it is all changed, they have opened up a room in the front of the pub which has an open fireplace and just the raw brick walls, with plenty of cracks. We had some really fun times there over the years, mainly after cricket each Sat. Denise I assume the report actually relates to the Welcome Hotel at Koetong as in December 1886 the license was transfered from William Osmond to John Mildren. By 1895 is was reported that five hotels were on the road b/w Corryong - Tallangatta. In 1897 we had - Wabba Hotel (Wabba) - Jane Marsden Welcome Hotel (Koetong) - Herman Gereke Koetong Hotel (Koetong) - Louisa Peacock Cambourne Hotel (Koetong) - Honora Shelley Travellers Rest Hotel (Bullioh) - Christina McKay. By 1900 we still had the same 5 hotels, the only change, Helena O'Donuhoe now held the reins at the Koetong Hotel. Since there were 3 hotels at 'Koetong', & not sure of their locations (other then it would be logical to assume Cambourne may have been nearer to, or at present day Shelley) - I am unsure whether the present Koetong Hotel would have been Welcome or Koetong - or either. However - can recommend the food & the lemon squashes........& the pleasant atmosphere. Chris Chris, do you know if this hotel eventually became the Welcome Hotel? Hi list, regarding junk mail, I used to get a lot, but now just the online medication ads. I use a program called mailwasher pro, which allows me to scan and view the emails before opening my mail program. I can bounce emails back to the unwanted sender, and they get an undelivered mail message, and hopefully remove you from their mailing list. It also assists in virus detection. They also offer a free trial. Link to the site is listed here. http://www.firetrust.com/products/pro/ Regards Phil -----Original Message----- From: Wendy [mailto:wendyfensom@optusnet.com.au] Sent: Sunday, 14 November 2004 12:19 PM To: AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HC] Re Junk Mail Hi Bev, Yes, I've had various emails over the years from places like Nigeria and the Ivory Coast wanting my bank account details, etc. They pop up every now and then. The worst ones at the moment seem to be the 'drug' web sites wanting to sell cheap tablets, etc. I have cut my junk mail by around 90 percent or even more - my provider provides a free service and they automatically dump most of the junk into a special mailbox where it stays for two weeks so that you can check it if you want to. I didn't have to say what had to be dumped like some software systems do - they just seem to be able to identify most of it somehow. It's great as I only receive a handful of rubbish a week instead of truckloads and I never bother to check any more. I imagine more network providers will provide this type of service in the future so it might pay you to check with yours.
