    3. Hi Merren, Here is Reginald McMillan (son of William McMillan and Martha Jane McKibbin) Their first child, Reginald was born on March 17th 1885, possible at Stanley. After leaving school he worked in the district as a miner. He later married Lucy Flannery and they had two children. Lucy died in 1918, so their two children were separated for some years. Their son James went to an aunt in Barnawartha and Mary stayed with Martha. They were later reunited when the family moved to Melbourne. Reginald lived with his mother for most of his life after the death of his wife. Lucy is buried at Burwood Cemetery. Reginald died in 1963 and was cremate at Springvale cemetery. In 1894 he must have been staying with his grandparents, Robert McKibbin and Mary Ann McKibbin, nee McGee. Can't find out who Alexander McCullough is, though - thought you might know. Poole, Mr. William Evans, eldest son of Mr. Robert Evans of Wahgunyah to Miss Jane Murphy eldest daughter of Mr. Henry Murphy of Springhurst. # Marina, which Cd for Beechworth are you speaking of? # I wonder if the Henry above is one of yours? # As for access to the Burke Museum, you may be lucky enough to find someone who will be visiting, but the mining register isn't that easy to go thru. You can access the Museum on their website and ask for research- there will be charge. # I have some of the old Ovens and Murray Advertisers during the 1850-1900 but without any dates or other information it too will be a huge field to wander thru. If you do have information, I would be happy to look thru the papers that I have. regards Denise

    3. Hello Marina, According to the Inquest CD this Catherine MURPHY died as a result of a ruptured blood vessel in Prahran. Digger - Inquest Index. Victoria 1840 - 1985 Surname: MURPHY Given Names: Catherine Place: Prahran Year: 1863 Reference: 279 Cause: Rupture Blood Vessel There may or may not be more information contained in the inquest notes, however I have always found them well worth looking at. Although this is a relatively early period in Victoria's history it would at least contain the doctor's deposition, possibly a deposition from the person who may have been nursing her or the person who reported her illness. There were hospitals in this area (and still are) so she may have been admitted to a hospital and if so there could be an admission report and a deposition from an attending nurse. At best she may be at her own residence and there could be a deposition from a family member. It would also be advisable to check for a will, which many times contain much information. Inquests and wills are ordered online from the PRO in North Melbourne and pages of the report can be ordered for 65 cents per page and postage is $2.75. I am quite happy to get these for you but am not going to North Melbourne this week, however they may be someone else on the list who is?? 3. Denise My Baldwins were great travellers. Came originally from Long Island, New York. My ancestor Samuel Baldwin, son of William Baldwin was born in Boston (although some records say Virginia!). By 1840s the family had travelled west through Ohio, Kentucky and Missouri, reaching the Wisconsin goldfields. Samuel arrived in Sydney 1851, went to NZ for about 5 years, then back to NSW and Victoria. Thanks for the offer to look up BALDWIN in your book Simon

    3. Simon, I have checked three books so far and the name only appears in the book written about the town of Oakham Ma and other towns when a family may have moved or married into. Will do more when I can - Simon what did your Baldwin do in North East Vic? I may be able to narrow down where to look if I know. If it is here, it could be in one of many places. The Baldwin names are - Baldwins of Spencer (all with surname Spencer unless otherwise shown) John William Zerubbael (Zorobbabel) of Spencer Joseph of Malden, Charlton of Spencer Joseph of Malden Joseph of Mildford William and Mary (Howland) m - Sarah Elizabeth Holt (dau of George Gates Holt) then m- Ruth A Prouty of Oakham George Holt Philip BTW Simon this entry references Baldwin Genealogy 2:609), so obviously something has been done on the name. My book was written in the 1940s. As you can see, they moved around married elsewhere but the book is written about the families of Oakham Ma. 3. Hi Ronda Can help with on of these. Mary Elizabeth (Minnie) McKibbin, was the daughter of Alice McKibbin, born, according to my records 1867 in Yack when Alice was 22, and raised by Alice's parents Robert & Mary Ann (nee McGee). I have no Alexander McCullough - can you shed any light on him? Perhaps someone could do a birth lookup in Pioneers for parents of Alexander McCullough born 1885 -1887? Maybe Reginald McMillan was Martha Jane McKibbin's son. She married William McMillan. Again, unfortunately my CD has died but perhaps someone could do a birth lookup. 3. Kerry, Yes they were brothers, came out together from the States about 1855. Isaac stayed in Bright, had an interest in gold but his main occupation was in sawmilling industry. Very sadly most of their children died very young or as young adults. One family member has done a wonderful job with the family graves and has put plaques on it to represent each of the people buried there. Alexander, son of Walter and Ellen was my grandfather and I remember him well. He died in 1957. His brother Grant was killed in South Africa. What I have been doing is finding where all the Diggers came from, what groups they formed (usually they were brothers or in-laws etc) and where they ended up settling, I can nearly safely say that at least 80% of the High Country people (Bogong, Harrietville, Dargo, Omeo, Benambra etc..) came from the Crooked River Diggings, some came via Beechworth, some Buckland others Bendigo. There is a group of Americans that have come from Yackandandah Beechworth area and were nearly the first on the diggings except for the Omeo Benambra mob, They even called their reef The New American Reef. Also I found another from the States but not sure if its him or his wife from the US, his name is Samuel Riley married to Jane Huges, they travelled over from Osborne Flat with the Nelson Hubbert and Mary McKinnon party. It would be interesting to find out about the Smith family and if they were related to Oliver Smith. The other Smiths I have, have come from Gipps and Melb Although I hate researching the name Smith, I feel sorry for anyone that has this as their surname re genealogy. Some info Edward Kirk born Kilkenny Ireland, arrived Williamstown May 1872 where he went to join his sister Mary at Crooked river, and his sister Catherine at Dargo Flat. After spending seven years at the diggings he was very successful. Then went to Maffra where he bought 320 acres, rented 3000 acres and became a registered grazier. In 1883 he married Mary Ann O'Sullivan, then sold the 3000 acres in 1887 and bought a hotel and 1000 acres at Bullwah near Tallangatta, while still owning the 320 acres near Maffra Sale. I don't know what he came out for (gold, hideaway, anything) but he set up as an undertaker in and around Wangaratta, early 1900s removed to Melb. (Same work). cannot trace after 1916. Cheers Ray. ----- Original Message ----- From: Denise <denisem@powerup.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 16, 2004 8:56 PM Subject: [HC] Northeast and Americans > Hi all > for those of you who have American interests, I'm happy to look up another book I have here which was written about Americans in the gold times, and tell you if the name is mentioned. > > regards > Denise > >

    3. Hi Kerry, Typhoid fever etc are options I had often wondered about, due to the prevailing conditions of the epoch in which these people lived. Life had to be horribly "rough" and tough. You have just answered this question for me. Suicide - never considered that, but, had even thought of murder!!! Was getting really desperate with this one!!! The Catherine Murphy death cited, of a ruptured blood vessel has interested me as well. Have an inquest report coming for one Catherine's death, so shall wait and see what arises from that. 3. Hi Marina, I'm sorry the death certificate did not provide you with more information. I have a similar situation with my ggg-grandfather James HINCH who disappeared into smoke around 1853. I think it is he who died in Mudgee in 1877 - but how to prove it..... His wife remarried in 1855 but in those days a couple of years' desertion was sufficient to assume the spouse was dead. The evidence supports the fact that he left the marital home because his wife was probably cavorting with his friend and next door neighbour who she ultimately married. He sold his land to the neighbour and disappeared - maybe back to where he first started life in Australia as a convict. His death was the subject of an inquest but unlike Victoria the NSW records appear to be incomplete, so no joy there either. I won't be giving up but his life story becomes an obsession. Hi eldest daughter married in Beechworth in 1865 and the certificate suggests that he was still alive. His occupation at the time was the same as the person of the same name who died in 1877. How much proof does one need ?? Kind regards and I hope something turns up in the not too distant future. 3. Does anyone have any snippets you would be prepared to post, in regards the daily trials and tribulations of our ancestors in the northeast? My contribution - (g) - Bad feelings existed between NSW and Victorian colonists. When those from over the boarder presented their NSW money to pay for their licenses on the Ovens diggings they were told that foreign money was not accepted. Denise

    3. Hi Kerry, Many thanks, but I have had this data for some time, Yes , correct, Josephus and the two surviving children came to New Zealand, to go on to the Otago goldfields. They remained in NZ. But here lies yet another enigma. The two surviving children arrived, aged 6 and 4 respectively, unaccompanied by a parent on 15th March 1865, aboard the ship Hero to Otago. Why was there no parent with them? Despite the fact that I have ready access to passenger lists from Melbourne for this time period, Josephus cannot be definitely identified on any, as initials only are employed. Numerous J Murphy's!! Which one is mine??!! No Mrs M's aboard any ship that "fit" the time period. No death record for Catherine in NZ exists. Scenarios galore arise, Wendy. Something happened to Catherine in Aus I believe, this is why I have searched so long and persistently for her death. Locating it would partly answer the "riddle". As you mention this is the proverbial "needle" story, and one that I will never unravel satisfactorily. I really need to locate something/anything of Josephus between 1863 and 1865. The youngest child died 1863, in Beechworth, leaving this two year unknown gap. Did they go somewhere else? We will never know I'm afraid. Extremely grateful for your assistance Kerry. Thanks so much.
