Hi Chris Could you please look up Edward Kirk under Tallangatta. In 1883 he married Mary Ann O'Sullivan, then sold the 3000 acres in 1887 and bought a hotel and 1000 acres at Bullwah near Tallangatta, while still owning the 320 acres near Maffra Sale. Thanks heaps Kerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christine" <wildmob@dodo.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 18, 2004 4:47 PM Subject: [HC] Tallangatta Land Board 17/4/86 On Saturday morning, 17th April 1886 the Land Board was reopened in the Tallangatta Court House before Messrs. The Yackandandah Times 5/1/1900 "The third burial was on Boxing Day, when the remains of Mrs McCullough, wife of Mr John McCullough, who resides along the Beechworth Road were conveyed to their last resting place. Mr McCullough and family had the deepest sympathy of every resident of town in his and [their] bereavement at a season when all should be joyous. Mrs McCullough had not enjoyed good health, but lately she became so ill that Dr Acton advised an operation. The idea of Mr McCullough was to remove her to the Women's Hospital in Melbourne, but on reaching Beechworth she was so much worse that it was feared to risk the journey. She was taken to the Beechworth Hospital and on Thursday the operation to remove a tumour from her stomach was performed by Drs Coane and Haynes. The extreme heat was, however, much against her chance of recovery, although when Mr A Priestley went up on Friday she was doing as well could be expected in the circumstances. He went up again on Sunday morning and was then infor! med that there was no hope. Mr Priestley immediately returned, and getting a change of horses, with Mrs McCormick a sister of the deceased and Miss McCullough. Mr McCullough had been in Beechworth throughout. The worst fears were realised as blood poisoning had set in, and Mrs McCullough passed away peacefully on Christmas morning between 3 and 5 o'clock. The funeral took place on Boxing Day, the service being read by Rev. J. H. Meek. The brothers of the deceased acted as pall bearers. Not withstanding the Boxing Day Races, there was a large following at the funeral, Mr McCullough and family having been highly respected. The deceased, who was only 44 years of age leaves a young family of nine children. He brothers are Messrs Alex, James, John, William and George Priestley and her sister is Mrs McCormick."
Hi Merren, It appears that quite often children were sent to live with other relatives at various times, sometimes due to sickness of the mother etc. Isn't Mary Ann McCullough nee Priestly the lady who died of cancer on Christmas Day 1899 after having been crook for years? She had a tribe of kids, so Alexander was probably 'farmed out' to the McKibbins for a while to make things easier at home. Hi All, As always looking for some assistance. I have the wonderful book 'EDI The History of Early Selection and Settlement" by John Newton on page 109 there is a reference to the John Heywood property as being once in the name of Pearce & Barter. My g Grandmother Mary Elizabeth HART married John PEARCE in 1860, he died of gun shot wounds !!! on May 16 1877, she then married George BARTER February 13 1878. I am wondering if anyone has any records of the dates this land was in the name of Barter & Pearce. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Zola
EVANS - MURPHY - On the 22nd august 1877 at the Church of England Parsonage Wangaratta, by the Rev. Henry J. Poole, Mr. William Evans, eldest son of Mr. Robert Evans of Wahgunyah to Miss Jane Murphy eldest daughter of Mr. Henry Murphy of Springhurst. # Marina, which Cd for Beechworth are you speaking of? # I wonder if the Henry above is one of yours? # As for access to the Burke Museum, you may be lucky enough to find someone who will be visiting, but the mining register isn't that easy to go thru. You can access the Museum on their website and ask for research- there will be charge. # I have some of the old Ovens and Murray Advertisers during the 1850-1900 but without any dates or other information it too will be a huge field to wander thru. If you do have information, I would be happy to look thru the papers that I have. regards Denise
