    3. Hi Denise, It is really nice to have someone to "thrash" ideas around with, thank you so much. If I have the correct shipping arrival in NZ, of James SMITH, then he was at this time listed as a Tailor. And I know that the youngest daughter married into a family that seemed to be Mining/miners. But what James actually did in Australia I am unsure. The only other piece of info that I have on the family is that Ann was in Victoria about 20 yrs at the time of her death - making arriving in Victoria about 1857. If this is so then they were in NSW at least 10 years but it is still guess work. Thank you Pat -----Original Message----- From: Denise [mailto:denisem@powerup.com.au] Sent: Saturday, 20 November 2004 5:02 PM To: AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HC] SMITH >>From Ann SMITHs death certificate - The informant was her > son in law. The name Pioneer was bestowed on those who came early to the area. Beechworth for example gave their Pioneers a badge. As the numbers diminished (thru death) the year of arrival was moved from 1853 to the 1860s,, I guess so they could keep numbers under the banner Pioneer. Others may have other ideas of course, I'd be happy to hear their version. The Indexes in marriages usually don't give place of marriage but sometimes place of birth. What was the family doing? Mining? Farming? regards denise > The certificate also says "John Thomas BETTLES Son In Law of > deceased Pioneer - Bright" - does the word "Pioneer" mean or > imply many years in the area or would four-five years be > enough to qualify?? > > Youngest daughter first married in1869 (indexes do not state > "Bright") The child from this marriage was born in > Inglewood. 3. Hello, After replying/ thanking Denise I had a thought. On a death certificate does it usually mention whether the person was a widow/er or not?? From Ann SMITHs death certificate - The informant was her son in law. Can I conclude from that, that her husband was deceased?? The certificate also says "John Thomas BETTLES Son In Law of deceased Pioneer - Bright" - does the word "Pioneer" mean or imply many years in the area or would four-five years be enough to qualify?? Youngest daughter first married in1869 (indexes do not state "Bright") The child from this marriage was born in Inglewood. Which is quite a way away. Her second marriage was in 1873, and the children from this marriage, were born in Bright. Still looking for advice! Thank you. Regards, Pat

    3. Hi Denise, Thank you very much for these entries. I really appreciate your help. I have not as yet checked with the Bright Historical Society but shall look into that now. My problem is I am not sure whether he died in Sydney before they moved down, or even if the whole family lived in Tarnagulla and he died there before Ann and Annie moved on to Bright. Or if the family lived in Bright and Georgina moved out. So many variables! Maybe the best I can do is to collect all the possible James SMITHs. Maybe a death certificate may have some answers. 3. Hi all, I'm trying to put together a Favourites folder of Directories/ Electoral Rolls/ Census etc for what started to be the northeast but has expanded worldwide now. I'm hoping listers will be prepared to share their links on this list for us all. The one below just hit my desktop and I see a couple of familiar names from this list - it's for 1847 Port Phillip (ie Victoria) Denise http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dotwells/1847A.htm

    3. Does anyone on the list have BDMs for WA? If so I would appreciate a look up for death of one Catherine (KATE) nee SHERRY. I don't know her married name or when, but thanks to Ronda I do know she was living in WA in 1937. There are not a lot of options for Catherine KATE Sherry marriage in Victoria. The most likely is labelled as being born in Bright but they family didn't live there to my knowledge - they were in the Black Springs/Beechworth/Newtown area. I don't have children for this marriage either if this is possible. Thanks Denise

    3. Hi folks I've spent the last 2 hours trying to find the birth of Catherine who Ronda found actually belonged to my SHERRY family in Beechworth. Her mother's obit showed 3 daughters living at time of death in 1907 and I had only two, couldn't find the third. In 1937 Catherine is mentioned again in the Obit of her sister Christina. I am hoping someone can trick the BDMs into giving me Catherine's birth. Her age on the school records indicates she was 11.11 in 1883 (Jan) making her 12 that year - 1883-12years = 1871. I cannot find CAtherine under SHERRY CHERRY SHEARY or other adaptations. Could some please try to find Catherine born circa 1870/71 to John and Catherine SHERRY (nee Conway) in Beechworth Newtown area. Birth of a child in 1869 was Newtown, death of Matilda in 1871 (death at 5 weeks) was Beechworth. I can't locate a birth for Matilda either. Of course it is possible Catherine and Matilda were twins the birth not registered - although many others were before and afterwards. Appreciated Denise
