    3. Hoping someone may have a book with some early reference to Hurdle Flat in it. I'm looking for a group of Canadians who were mining in the area, particularly during the 1850s. Any items on these would be appreciated however small, and in particular a name which looks like AMYOT . regards Denise

(Photo round 1900's) Written on back of photo 'Cousin Bill MAC'. The young men appear to be of similar age (b) about 1870. Looks as if they're part of a wedding. 2. 3. Ian, Depending what info the researchers are after, they could access the correspondence files for school No 736 at the PRO for the years the fellow they are interested in was teaching there. Most likely there will be some letters he has sent in - generally if things are running smoothly there may not be much, but if there is any type of dispute happening there may be some really interesting infomation. If things got really ugly, they used to call in the District Inspector who conducted an inquiry with the various parties giving evidence. Nearly every rural school I have investigated has had some sort of major dispute over the years. 3. Thanks Denise, Robt held quite a bit of land and a couple of houses at the time of his death in 1876 so I'll see if I can hunt down the address. 3. I've had a look Wendy. I can't see the name Milne onSydney Road - my maps go just past the cemetery turn off, so perhaps it was further on. Then again, he may not have owned it outright and the person who purchased from him and paid for it would have his name on the maps. It may pay you to go into the Mapping Dept of SLV and have a look at the maps for yourself, a/ they may be clearer and b/ probably have more of Beechworth than I do. I thought I had the town covered but most possibly not. It's fascinating to look at the blocks and see the names on them, that we read about in the papers. 3. and named after Robert Battley himself, I believe he built the race track. It had several ads in the 1861 papers during July August. Just another one of those places that now has gone missing? It said 10 miles from Beechworth on the Melbourne Road. There was Woolshed township near Morse's Creek. It was during 1860/61 period too, that this started. Thankyou Ray. 3. Thanks for this Margery, will chase further. Well our feet are back on the mainland after a fantastic trip, but not standing idle!! Walking in the 'Tasmanian Wilderness' in the West Coast area was pure delight, a river cruise down the Gordon River incorporating a guided tour of Sarah Island (somewhat satirical!) & a heritage forest walk was fantastic. We were lucky enough to 'house sit' with 10mins walk of the CBD of Hobart before making our way back to Devonport via the Southern side. The Tasmanian landscape is so beautiful & so diverse for such a small island. Although we covered many many kms, I managed to squeeze in some quality shopping time as well. Luckily we took the family ute & not the family sedan, & no not just as the result of the Cadbury tour Denise!!! Happy to report Bass Strait was indeed kind to us, with NO seasickness. Now to the scenic Upper Murray early tomorrow for a family wedding on the banks of the upper reaches of the Murray River. Shall be a tad wet underfoot I feel, considering the rainfall there in the past couple of days... 1. Chiltern fire station theft rings alarm bells
    2. Jackie
    3. Chiltern firefighters in north-east Victoria are hoping someone will spot their antique station bell, which was stolen on Monday night. The bell weighs about 500 kilograms and stands almost a metre high. It is about 100-years-old and is inscribed with CFBB, standing for Country Fire Brigade Board. The station's captain Andrew Walls says it is hard to measure the bell's value. "I don't think it'd be scrap value, it wouldn't be worth the effort of taking it," he said. "Certainly as a conversation piece maybe it would have some value and of course the way we look at it, it's got historical value which you don't measure in dollars."
