The letter is from the librarian New Zealand S.AR.002.001.002-v12 3 December 2004 OTAGO GOLD RUSH Thank you for your email enquiry which was received by the Alexander Turnbull Library on 12 November 2004. I have consulted the unpublished collections catalogues of the Manuscripts and Archives Section of the Library, including the online database TAPUHI (http://tapuhi.natlib.govt.nz) in an effort to locate material relating to miner registers for the Otago gold rush. The only registers within the Manuscripts' Collection are as follows: Ø Tuapeka. Magistrate's Office Register of issue of miners' rights and business licences in the Tuapeka gold fields 19 Aug-1 Nov 1861 qMS-2045 Ø Index to Register of issue of miners' rights and business licences in the Tuapeka gold fields (qMS-2045) [1990-2003] MS-Papers-7643-1, Jackson, Jean, fl 1970-2003, Further papers The first register lists licences for miners' rights and business licences for the Tuapeka gold fields. This section on miners' rights contains 6,291 names listed in numerical order with issue date. No other personal details are given and this section of the volume is unindexed. The second section at the rear of the volume lists business licences issued and these are on alphabetical pages, with date of issue, name, occupation and fee (usually five pounds). This register has been microfilmed and is available at MS-Copy-Micro-0713, Tuapeka. Magistrate's Office, Register of issue of miners' rights and business licences in the Tuapeka gold fields. It is possible for this microfilm to be interloaned to your local library for a research period of four weeks. An interloan request for this microfilm can be placed through your local library. The index at MS-papers-7643-1 is an alphabetical list of qMS-2045. This lists includes license numbers but no dates or further information relating to miners. There is further material relating to gold mining in general within the Collection and the catalogue details for these items can be consulted on the online TAPUHI database: http://tapuhi.natlib.govt.nz. I've checked some of them - and even found a letter written by some passengers including one of my gg-grandmothers thanking the captain for safe passage across the Tasman - around 1862/63 from memory.
