Hi Ronda/Anthony "Messrs. Blewett and party who were successful in the Warden's Court a few days ago in securing the forfeiture of the Bon Accord have followed up the order of the Warden by paying the £110 compensation allowed to Messrs. Bigelow and party. During the week they pegged out the claim taking out eight men's ground. On Wednesday they made a start, removing the machinery from the Homeward Bound. In regard to the Homeward Bound negotiations are in progress between Mr. C. Hancock and the representative of a London syndicate for the purchase thereof. Some months ago a sale could have been effected but for the machinery, which the syndicate objected to, as it would be comparatively useless to them. As Mr Blewett can find use for the machinery at the Bon Accord the objection will thus be removed." Yack times 11/5/1894. The Wardens Court was held 28/4/1894 at Beechworth - report in Yack Times 4/5/94 - although it is extremely hard to read. Chris

Hi All, Just a note to let you know Graphic Artist Roger Cooper and I recently received a Bronze Award in the Australian Sign & Graphic Awards for Illustration and Mural of the Year. A friend of mine passed on the following URL for a thread at RootsChat that is very amusing. If you have some ancestors who had unusual surnames, check this out. It's hilarious. There are at present 7 pages to read. I couldn't stop laughing at some of the names. I was under the belief that surnames originated as an indication of occupation or "son of". I think some of these might reflect a pastime rather than occupation....then again..... http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,88693.0.html Jackie Q
No names, no clues Mary. I'm hoping someone may recognize the marriage timeframe. Well it may be only a guess, but it's the best one yet! And better than anything I've been able to think of by far. I'm wondering whether it's a bad transcription of MN for "Maiden Name"? I dunno. Welcome home Chris. Hi Christine, I suppose if they were mad they may have run around naked, would have been a tad cold in winter. Hope there are others who can shed some light for me. Wonder if this is where the Nursery Rhyme originated - Mother Duck she went out one day, over the hills and far away, Mother Duck said quack, quack, quack but only 1/2/3/4 little ducks came back. More than likely the missing ducks age the vegies and plum sauce. Hello Again Denise, This sounds interesting. Pity there are no names. Any other clues? Where he & she were from originally? Thanks Denise, I now have something to offer the list as well as your Coach Rides. I am sure the quality of my gggrandfather's meat products would have been good - ................... The FOSTER family from Coventry had apprenticed their sons as butchers for some generations, and initially after my gggrandfather Wlm. Hy. FOSTER mined in One Mile and Two Mile mines when he first came here, it is interesting he went back to his apprenticeship trade of being a butcher. I did not know he used the name "Henry" instead of "William". I know there has to be a good story in the name Madman's Gully and Devil's Elbow - can anybody help? Thank you, Mary Sent: Saturday, October 01, 2005 10:59 PM Subject: [HC] OMA 3.10.1861 > Henry Foster > BUTCHER > Madman's gully > near the Chinese Camp > BEECHWORTH > Late of Devil's Elbow > Prime Corned Beef and Pickled Tongues always on sale. > - > > >
Hi all, Put it down to my senile decay if you like, but I'm trying to think of the explanation of an abbreviation on my aunt's Death Cert (she died at Walwa). The initials "M. I." are used, and I'm sure it must stand for something like "maiden name" but I can't quite get it. It refers to my grandmother as "Margaret ROSS, Previously GORDON, M.I. BARRON". We knew she was born Margaret BARRON, and her first marriage was to someone named GORDON before marrying Henry ROSS but can anyone explain these initials for me please? Peter Ross
Would you please contact me off the list please. Thank you. Marina Christchurch New Zealand.
