Called in to see this free exhibition (The Way We Were) at the SLV on Friday, and to get a glimpse of the fantastic dome, newly restored, with glass panels in the roof as originally intended and constructed. High above the reading room (level five), where the stacks used to be when I was in my youth a zillion years ago, is a great exhibition of Victorian memorabilia, mementoes, photos and artefacts from the time of pre-European settlement till the present. I was particulary fascinated by the goldfields material. I spent two hours reading and inspecting the exhibition, but only got less than half way. However, that was long enough for me to inspect some ambotype (yeah, I hadn't heard of it either) photographs of Dunolly township in 1860, especially scenes of Broadway. Other scenes I saw were of Talbot, Majorca, Maryborough, Ballarat and other places of interest to this list. Not hugely worth the effort of a trip down from the country, but if you are near the SLV, do go and have a look at it. You might spot stuff of interest to you. Trevor
