I haven't found any of my women on the Petition yet, but I'm happy to 'lurk' and do searches while I'm glued to this computer searching for stuff myself...! I found several references to MOONLIGHT HILL. It sounds like it was near Stawell: 1. from: http://www.heritage.vic.gov.au/pages/pdfs/Korong1.pdf Wedderburn/Inglewood/St Arnaud Divisions4 Sept 1875 Moonlight Hill rushed (South-east of Guy's Rush), and later in the month '2nd Hill', further removed from Moonlight was discovered. Soon after this Possum Hill, that became the main centre of the rushes, was opened ... The discovery took place less than a mile north-east of McIntyre's, good gold was found, and the rush, known as Orville Rush attracted thousands, spreading from the old Hard Hills at McIntyre's (worked 1859-61) east through Possum Hill, Moonlight Hill to Billy the Mailman's Hill, and was pegged nearly to Irishtown. By May 1876 there was 'an immense spread of calico', many stores, and twenty-eight licensed hotels on the rush. 2. from: http://home.vicnet.net.au/~stawgeny/reefs.html View of Stawell Goldfields 1880, looking north-west from Moonlight Hill. This area of Stawell, including 'Big Hill', was formerly known as 'The Reefs' and it is from this that we derive our newsletter title of 'The Reefs Rumblings'. 3. from: The Great Ocean Road Region Landscape Assessment Study (dse.vic.gov.au corangamite) Summary of Corangamite Issues Development Pressures Development pressure within the Corangamite Shire is focused along the coast and in the coastal hinterland. Within these areas it is centred on townships such as Port Campbell and along the Great Ocean Road, and comprises mainly residential and tourism development. There is increasing pressure for farm stay and B&B style accommodation in the coastal and rural hinterland, with associated signage. Development proposals for gas processing plants, in the hinterland, and timber plantations around Gellibrand River and Moonlight Hill, are expected to continue. 4. Moonlight, Moonlight Hill and Moonlight Flat are all listed on the Australian War Memorial (London) placenames. 5. Also, from GENANZ-L Archives @ Rootsweb Helen Mitchell wrote: ...My great-grandfather had a grocery store at 'Moonlight Hill' near Stawell around 1930. Is there anyone out there with photos or any info of Moonlight Hill around this time?... There're also quite a few hits on MOONLIGHT FLAT, here's one near Castlemaine, Metcalfe: 6. From: http://moonlightflat.com/ Moonlight Flat is a ex-goldmining town outside of Castlemaine in Victoria, Australia. At its peak, five thousand people lived here. All that survives now is a church, a mansion, plenty of ruins... and four more recent houses. The population is on the rise again. Teresa > Can anyone tell me where Moonlight Hill is? I have one of my ladies mentioned in the Women's Suffrage Petition living in this area. > Carmel > I think I am also interested in a related place as two of my interests -- Abednego and Henry TONKIN -- were born at Moonlight Flat in 1860
