    3. Wow! Thanks for all your replies! Answering some suggestions and queries - Isaac EAT was born in Eng. to Edward EAT & Elizabeth and came to Adelaide in 1847 with his wife Lucy (CAVE) and family. I have a very extensive information database on this family. I do not believe there would be a Chinese connection to the name in this case because of the info I have on the Eng connections. Must admit I was really amazed to find some chinese immigrants with the name EAT ! Yes, I did know about EET, but not of our tree - just another way to spell the name which is also spelt EATS EATES EATT EATTS by various branches of the descendants of Isaac & Lucy EAT. I am sure EAT is how he and his wife would have spelt their name in any reports or registrations of death, but one never knows. So the mystery continues !! Josephine Eatts

    3. Josephine Not sure of the exact date your man went missing but just sifting through indexes and in Bendigo 1856 there are Two males names unknown, one drowned the other just found dead. Another Male adult found drowned in 1852, One was wilfully murdered in 1855 and another shot himself, insane in 1857. Just a thought but probably not fully helpful Carmel ----- Original Message ----- From: "Josephine Eatts" <jeatts@sa.chariot.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 05, 2005 1:09 PM Subject: EAT in Bendigo > > Wow! 3. Hi Josephine I have no connection to this family but was fascinated by the name EAT, so I googled it and I am curious to know if his wife may have waited to register his death back in Yankalilla, SA where she returned his body and where he is buried according to "Blackburn and Pearce Genealogy" website: http://au.geocities.com/twin_mum_too/index.html) "...EAT, Isaac The details around Isaac's death are interesting, though rather patchy in detail. A resident of Yankalilla in South Australia, he took his wife and family to the goldfield of Victoria. Quite a feat in itself - he had 12 children, although at least one of them was married by then, most would have still been only young. While in Bendigo, he died and his grief stricken wife Eliza (who was heavily pregnant) gathered up the family and with two bullock teams returned with Isaac's body to Yankalilla, where he was buried..." Hope it's OK to butt in like this...! 3. Hi Josephine & list, Here is another spelling FYI. I remember seeing Josiah/Jacob's shipping arrival in SA with this spelling and could not believe it, so I checked deaths and there he possibly was with same surname spelling. I was looking for someone else at the time and do not have any further info of this name. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dicummings/Images/Ships/1848Constance.htm Surname: EEET Given Names: Jacob Date: 1898-01-01 Age: 76y Death Place: Adelaide Rade

    3. Thanks for that Rade Yes, I was aware of one Josiah/Jacob EEET who SA died 1898, but did not know when he had come to Australia. I haven't been able to establish any connection with our family although the use of Josiah/Jacob would seem to fit in with the biblican name theme e.g. Isaac, who also had a brother named David and a son named Jacob. In the IGI index there are more derivations of the name - mostly appearing in the 1600's - names such as EETTE, EATTE, EATTA, EEET. At this stage my research goes back to an EAT marriage in 1740, but during the 1700-1800's there was also a lot of use of the name EATE. I have also discovered a bishop in the 6th Century named EATA. I do find these derivations so interesting and so frustrating !! My own family name (Fricker) has 23 derivations that I know of!! Thanks for your interest Josephine Eatts
