    3. Hello Chris, My great grandmother simply had: "widow, deserted by her husband in 1863." The marriage took place in 1872, i.e. nine years later. After research, we found that he was in trouble with the law in Victoria, went back to Tasmania (where he was born and married) in trouble (serious) again, sentenced to life imprisonment. Before he deserted his wife he handed their children over to his brother who contracted ("adoption" with a solicitor-drawn-up contract) to bring them up as his own, then he took his wife to another town, where he evicted his wife from their home before he took off. She had to get work in this new town as a servant to keep herself. Her new husband was her employer.
