I don't know if anyone has family connections with the Rocky Flat Rush, but this might be of interest to those who do. The source is the 'Talbot Leader' 1 April 1864, page 2:- "The gold obtained from the wash dirt taken from the shaft at Rocky Flat, the bottoming of which has caused so much excitement, was brought to our office last evening by Messrs Jones and Peters of Rocky Flat. The gold is rather fine, but solid, and is of exactly the same appearance as that obtained from the portions of land which have been worked. Its weight was 19 dwts. The claim has been called the Queen Victoria." In the next column of the same newspaper is the following: - "IMPORTANT RUSH TO ROCKY FLAT The prospects of the Rocky Flat Lead are again in the ascendant, and a rush has set in to the crown land on the south side of M'Cullough's paddock, a large number of claims having been taken up during the last two days. The eagerness now displayed to secure ground in this locality is owing to the good prospects obtained by Davis, James, and party who bottomed on Tuesday night, at a depth of 110 feet. On Wednesday morning some of the washdirt was tried and a prospect of 1 dwt to the dish obtained, since then the whole of the dirt off the bottom has been washed, and yielded 19 dwts of gold. This result at once convinced the shareholders that they had a good claim, and the good news travelled quickly. On Wednesday claims were taken up by several Rocky Flat miners, and others by men from Majorca, and yesterday all available ground for about half a mile had been marked out. The shaft is situated close to that of the Koh-i-Noor Company, who were unable to bottom with a whim, and after spending many weeks in endeavouring to raise the washdirt abandoned their claim. It is now certain that had the Koh-i-Noor party been able to bottoim, the ground for a long distance ahead would have been in work ere this." Now, can any one tell me where Rocky Flat is/was?? Trevor
Hi Trevor, This site may be of interest, it has a mention of Rocky Flat Lead. It doesn't say "where" but lists companies in operation in the area, you may be able to go from there. http://www.heritage.vic.gov.au/pages/pdfs/SouthWestRegionfinalreport.pdf regards Kerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Trevor" <tjwilliams@iinet.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 21, 2005 8:54 PM Subject: Rocky Flat Rush >I don't know if anyone has family connections with the Rocky Flat Rush, but >this might be of interest to those who do. Is it correct or is there a problem at my end? Trevor
Hi Trevor, another snippet from James Flett's book'The History of Gold Discovery in Victoria' On page 256 under a heading Scandinavian Lead. Some quotes. 'The last and richest gold discovery in the area was the Scandinavian Lead, that opened early in 1859 on the site of Talbot, and around which the town grew.' 'Other discoveries were made during the Scandinavian rush in 1859. Rocky Flat, east of the main lead was discovered separately'. The reference for the information is the Talbot Leader of 11 June 1864. This might help with the location. The Flett book you mention was one of the collection I lost when my house burnt several years ago. I also lost his history of Dunolly! Fortunately, I saved my family history notes and photos. I regret losing the two book though!
