Good morning, I have just been sent a copy of a photo of my great great grandfather, Walter Grose in his Bowenvale fire brigade uniform. Photo was taken by J Weller some time between 1885 -1891 we think. Does anyone have any infomation about the brigade and its members around this time? Hi Nicole, Your gg grandfather might have been there at the formation of the brigade, following taken from 'Footprints' A history of the Tullaroop Shire - Barbara Willis. Bowenvale Fire Brigade In 1887, the Shire of Tullaroop donated 150 pound to Chinaman's Flat and Timor to form a fire brigade and in the same year granted a site for an engine shed. Water was laid on to the shed in 1888 and regular fund-raising events were fireworks display by Professor Moore, and a procession. On 11th December 1889, a fire broke out at 1 a.m. in the kitchen or servant's room of Mr DuBourg's store and dwelling in Timor Road. Only a little furniture was saved. Hay and the stables were saved by the bucket brigade, but the books of Registrar DuBourg were lost in the 3,000 pound fire. (This included the Cemetery records) In 1890 legislation put part-time volunteer brigades under the control of the Country Fire Authority; so that in 1892 the Bowenvale Fire Brigade equipment was sold for 243/11/6pd and the brigade reformed under the auspices of the Country Fire Authority. The first officers of the Bowenvale Fire Brigade were Captain Frederick Wills, miner, Lieutenant William Simmonds, miner, hose officers Robert Gourlay, miner, and William Campbell, blacksmith.
