For the benefit of the > geographically challenged and those without google ... The Gippsland JORDAN goldfields are pretty well known ... However - googling - it is possible to learn that there was a goldfields district known as JORDAN'S in the region of Wehla, Kingower, Rheola - which is near Dunolly - Wedderburn ... part of the golden triangle?? I imagine that the area was named JORDAN'S after one of the early arrivals to the district Here are a few references to JORDAN in the Kingower region: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/GENANZ/1997-06/0865731600 > WEHLA (south of Wedderburn) in Central Victoria was once known as > JORDAN'S RUSH http://sbs.com.au/sbsmain/gold/story.html?storyid=113 Talking about the famous Spondulix nugget .. note Berlin was an earlier name for Rheola. > This nugget was found during November 1872 in Eureka Gully, which is > part of the *Jordan’s gold field*, between Berlin and Wehla, Victoria. > It was found by Wilton and party and weighed in at 155 ounces, > measured 17 by 16 by 5 centimetres. It was also associated with some > quartz and ironstone. at this site: http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/resources/ms_0249.pdf we learn that Parks Victoria manages Jordan Road , Kingower area, Loddon Shire. at this site: http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/resources/mresources/src_2008/map33.pdf Parks Victoria has supplied a map showing Jordan Road , Wehla, Rheola and Kingower. In my original post I confirmed that the unnamed baby CARN had her birth registered at Kingower and that there was in fact a registration for her sad and early death with birthplace of JON ... checking one two or the other names also with JON as birthplace on the death registration suggested a connection to the Dunolly district .. in short ... I think it is very reasonable to assume (until contrary information arises) that JON was an abbreviation used for a short while for the area once known as Jordan's or Jordan's Rush or Jordan's goldfields near Kingower. Surely during the rushes the goldfields generally would have been dreadful places to give birth and care for new babies? It is a wonder and a credit to the parents, friends, community (and no doubt a lot of good luck) that babies survived at all ... and as another indicated ... it is highly likely that many babies were born and died without registration ... regards Robert in Melbourne Chris Ward wrote: > I may be geographically challenged but I always understood that the Jordan > Goldfields were in Gippsland around the Walhalla area which is a long way > from Kingower! > > Regards, > Chris > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of robert.j > Sent: Sunday, 19 October 2008 5:28 PM > To: juliemhopper > Cc: [email protected] > Subject: Re: More about place names > > Hi, > > Julie is referring to the unnamed baby daughter of Thomas CARN and Ann > CARN nee MARTIN, the indexes indicate that the baby's birth was > registered in 1859 at Kingower and the death of one day old baby CARN is > in the indexes for 1859 - and the *birth* location in the indexes for > the death is JON. > > JON I would imagine refers to the JORDAN goldfields - which are in the > same region as Kingower - maybe 7 or 8 miles south westish of Kingower > away - less as the crow flies?? > > It is worth noting that the abbreviation JON only appears about 6 times > - and in each case it refers to the birth location of a deceased child - > about 5 from 1859 and one in 1856. > > I can't help with any cemetery information - but googling Jordan with > Kingower or Dunolly or Wehl or Rheola should help with some of the eraly > history of the place ... > > was the baby buried in JON ??? - hmm - I really don't know - > > good luck > > Robert > in melbourne > > > > juliemhopper wrote: > >> Greetings all, >> >> Courtesy of a kind lister, I now have a family record for the birth and >> death of an infant whose existence I had not previously known of.
