Dear Listers While researching a family member in the Victorian Digger Index, I found an abbreviation for a birthplace I don't recognize. It was entered in 1871 for a birth in 1820 (on a marriage entry) It was: KINGS CO Looks like Kings College to me, but that's ridiculous. I know there was or is a Kingstown in Dublin. Is this familiar to anyone? Cheers Rowena ( in Melbourne)

Hi Rowena I am probably jumping at shadows as you do not say in just what part of the world this place might be. Suspecting it might be Oz, I found a place in S. A. called Kingscote - principal town and port on Kangaroo Island. In 1883 name was changed to Queenscliffe but the name of Kingscote was eventually reinstated. (Reed, A. W., Place Names of Australia, 1973, Reed Books Pty Ltd, Sydney) I will keep an eye open in other places to see what I can find ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rowena Gough" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 28, 2008 6:31 AM Subject: Birthplace Abbreviation Help > Dear Listers > > > > While researching a family member in the Victorian Digger Index, I found > an > abbreviation for a birthplace I don't recognize.
