Fascinating story- enlisting at about the age of 40 ... Thomas CROWLE born in Pleasant Creek/Stawel in 1873, father:John CROWLE mother: Eliza Kirkham. Killed at gallipoli in 1915 ... In 1917 his Thomas's sister, Eliza Jane McRoberts nee CROWLE (born 1876 Pleasant Creek) writes from Boulder, WA, that her brother apparently enlisted in the services - deserted and then went to Sydney and enlisted again using the name Thomas MURRAY. the sister also wonders how it was possible for Thomas MURRAY to enlist in Australia and be reported ead - KIA 3 months alter ... And we learn that Thomas had another sister - Mrs. Alma Mather nee Crowle of Millswyn street South Yarra. (she died in 1930) Alam had a couple of children - including Evelyn Maud MATHER - Evelyn married a Patrick james HASSETT and had at least 2 children: John Stanley HASSETT and Evelyn Maud SAYERS nee Hassett so I guess somebody could try to locate family of John HASSETT or Evelyn SAYERS ... the family were in the St.arnuad district ... check there? good luck Robert in melbourne. Eliza Jane McRoberts nee Crowle had some children including a Gladys Ilex? McRoberts - Gladys married Robert John LOWRY in Boulder, WA in 1924 ... and were living in West Midland, Guildford subdistrict, Swan District WA in 1936 - robert john LOWRY was born in boulder and had a number of siblings - so maybe there are a few Lowry people still in the district and may be able to hook Dave up with some Crowle family. good luck Robert Dave Evans wrote: > Thanks Robert, > > Dave > At 11:36 AM 3/11/2008, robert.j wrote: >> Fascinating story- >> >> enlisting at about the age of 40 ... >> >> Thomas CROWLE born in Pleasant Creek/Stawel in 1873, father:John >> CROWLE mother: Eliza Kirkham. >> >> Killed at gallipoli in 1915 ... >> >> In 1917 his Thomas's sister, Eliza Jane McRoberts nee CROWLE (born >> 1876 Pleasant Creek) writes from Boulder, WA, that her brother >> apparently enlisted in the services - deserted and then went to >> Sydney and enlisted again using the name Thomas MURRAY. >> >> the sister also wonders how it was possible for Thomas MURRAY to >> enlist in Australia and be reported ead - KIA 3 months alter ... >> >> And we learn that Thomas had another sister - >> Mrs. Alma Mather nee Crowle of Millswyn street South Yarra. My husband is connected to this family. His g-grandmother was Harriet Sarah KIRKHAM, sister of Eliza Kirkham CROWLE. Although I knew of the CROWLE/MURRAY alias, I didn't connect the request to this person.
