John William Stubbs came out to Australia on the Champion of the Sea, ship in 1864 along with 5 siblings and their mother. John William Stubbs and Charlotte had 11 children Part of this family is some how or another related to the William Stubbs family of Tarnagulla I know that some of this family ended up in Mildura - and someone has done some genealogy work on the family as I've found it in the LDS's records. I also have a picture of a nice of John William Stubbs' anyone who might have some information on these people and is willing to pass it along - I would be most grateful - Thank you Mary Balle
Hi, first of all - some observations on the info supplied - The marriage of Charlotte HOLT to John William STUBBS was registered in Victoria Australia because that is where the couple was married - Buckinghamshire appears in the index as the birthplace - not the marriage place. Please be a little cautious with LDS member information. It is well known that some enthusiastic members of the LDS have made mistakes - so please try to find parish records rather than trust the say so of an LDS member - Checking the www.freebmd.org.uk site we learn that The marriage of James Jacob STUBBS to Hannah WILLIAMS was regsitered in the Hackney District, in the June quarter of 1842. Checking the census info for 1851 and 1861 and accepting that some of the family came to Australia aboard the Champion of the Sea in 1864 - there seems to be no evidence that Hannah WILLIAMS had Stafford as another surname - On the contrary - there is some evidence to suggest that WILLIAMS was Hannah's maiden surname - it was used as the second name for daughter Anne and quite possibly for son John - a couple of the index records for Victoria record births to John WILLIAMS Stubbs and Charlotte Holt. By the way - John and Charlotte certainly had a number of children but about 5 of these children died at a very early age - most of the children were born in the Dunolly Wycheproof Charlton region of Victoria - reasonably close to Mildura to encourage family to settle there? Hannah's birth place is recorded as Surrey in both the 1851 and 1861 census records. The Vic indexes indicate that an Arthur STUBBS son of Arthur O'Neil STUBBS (John William(s) STUBBS's brother) died in Mildura in 1926. The William STUBBS family of Tarnagulla? It appears there was a William STUBBS married to a Kate KIRWAN in Victoria in 1856 and the couple had a few children - one or two had their births registered in TARNAGULLA - proving a connection between the this Stubbs family that arrived in Victoria as early as 1856 to the Stubbs family that arrived in 1864 is going to be very difficult using the information supplied - please re-organise your data into something a little more cohesive and re-state exactly what you are after? Do want to know what happened to the STUBBS children that arrived on the Champion of the Sea? Or do you want to know about James Jacob STUBBS and his parents, grandparents etc.? The 1861 census shows that Hannah is the head of the household and she is shown as a married woman - no mention of her husband - I wonder where was he? good luck Robert in Melbourne. mballe wrote: > I am attempting to trace the family of STUBBS, John William [John aged 22 at marriage - he came out to OZ at aged 18 - went back to England and married] CM 941319 > Marriage Spouse: HOLT, Charlotte Marriage Place: Buckinghamshire Reg Year: 1868 Reg State: Victoria Ref Number 302 - Died 1922 #1189 at Dford - buried Daylesford 10 January 1922 aged 76. > father of John William Stubbs, Jas [James] Jacob Stubbs - mother Hannah Williams[Stafford appears to be Hannah's maiden name a- she was born in Thadwell England] John William Stubbs > wife Charlotte Holt Stubbs died Oct 1933 aged 57- buried at Daylesford. > > John William Stubbs came out to Australia on the Champion of the Sea, ship in 1864 along with 5 siblings and their mother. > John William Stubbs and Charlotte had 11 children > > Part of this family is some how or another related to the William Stubbs family of Tarnagulla > I know that some of this family ended up in Mildura - and someone has done some genealogy work on the family as I've found it in the LDS's records.
