If your new PC (or laptop) comes with Vista, then you should be able to install XP as well and have a dual boot system, where you choose the OS at boot-up. XP runs faster than Vista, it needs less memory, less money and works faster. The PC maker you bought from should have offered you the option of XP as well as Vista. It's still an available OS, and a "downgrade" to it is included with the Vista licence.
