Hi Kate, Volumes 2 & 3 of An Index to the Tarrangower Times, the Maldon newspaper, cover issues from 1872-8 and have 20 references to newspaper articles which refer to Ryland - either George, or his son Richard, who had a drapery in Maldon 1876-8, or just "Captain" of the Mt Alexander Battalion, or just "Mr". The actual articles are available from the Maldon History Research Centre (www.maldonmuseum.com.au) for $1 per A4 sheet, bearing in mind that most articles are in long columns and require more than one sheet to print them off. For general information, Volume 1 of the Index covers the period from the first surviving Times in June 1858 to January 1862. An Indexer is working on 1B which will fill some of the gap between 1 & 2, and another indexer is working on Volume 4, which extends beyond 1878. More indexers are required. Interested people may contact me for further information.
