Dear listers, I'm just back from a holiday to New Zealand and amongst the tourist brochures I picked up is one from the Cromwell area on the south island. This area was originally settled as a gold rush. One of the localities listed in the brochure is Bendigo. The information given is that "Thomas Logan, an alluvial gold miner, discovered a clearly defined reef in 1863." >From 1869 over half a million pounds of gold was extracted from the reefs. There is no mention of where Thomas Logan came from, but I assume he was from Bendigo, Victoria. I'm therefore posting this on the mailing list in case someone is missing a family member called Thomas Logan. It might be worth chasing him up in the New Zealand records. I have no further information other that what I've typed here and don't know for sure that Thomas came from Victoria, but if he chose to name his reef "Bendigo" you would expect he came from there.
