Hello fellow listers I am new, as of today, to this list and also new to researching in Vic. I understand that gaining free index for BDM does not occur in Vic. I am wondering if sks could advise me as to what I need to do from NSW to trace the ZILLES family from Ballarat Vic. I am looking for the marriage and children of Conrad and Hilda Elsie (SIEMERING) ZILLES...Conrad Zilles may have been a musician. Many thanks for any suggestions Poppy

And my Grandad, Albert Dorman ran the chemist shop in Ararat. His wife was Ada Evelyn Williams. They married in Oct1921. They had twin girls, Joyce & Evelyn in May1922 at Ararat Hospital but they were too premmie & died. My Mum (Peggy) Margaret Pittard Dorman was born there too in May1923. They moved to Chelsea I think 1924. Cheers. Hello Jenny, Dentition means cutting teeth, and it was not an unusual cause of death back in those times. My 3 times Great Grandmother lost 2 or 3 children to this unfortunate problem back in the 1850's. In the Goldfields of Victoria. S. Jeffery New South Wales.

They had the post office there. My mother was a pupil teacher at the school, and they, of course knew all the locals. I remember mention of the SMART family and the finding of a "cocoa tin" containing tiny nuggets left behind in the goldrush days. The dog that located it should have lived in luxury thereafter, don't you think? And the SCHERGER family.. now there's fame. WW2 Air Chief Marshal SCHERGER helped my brother, who had been working as foreman welder on the "Wirraway" plane, to join the air-force as an aicraftsman, though he was in an "essential service" With the end of construction of the Wirraway, my brother thought he would be more useful maintaining airplanes in war zones. My brother's wife had deserted their two infant children and went to live in Sydney, and ACM Scherger arranged for his sister, Miss Scherger, living in Ararat, to take care of the boys for the duration of the war. They went to the Church of England school, I think. I was only six when war broke out, so my memory is that of a child, and with brothers and sisters 20 and 10 years older than myself, I heard little of the Ararat days, except that my uncle, George HANSFORD as Secretary of the Mechanics Institute and Library, daily drew up a cumulative index on the local paper. I can remember, age 5, having to wait to look at a big book in a glass case that had taken my eye, whilst he completed the newspaper page he was working on. Though my mother explained the importance of the newspaper work, it was lost on an impatient child, who, even at 5 had read every book in our household, including my brother's wrestling and aviation books. I thought, then, that newspapers were unimportant: didn't we wrap potatoes in them at the shops? My, didn't I change my mind as I did family tree research! Regards Ada Ackerly
A quick mail to the list with the subject "Rollcall" or similar is very quick and easy, however, it is not of much value. It doesn't encourage one to open the mail unless you are searching for the surname "Rollcall", in which case you will be very disappointed. It is less than useful when it gets to the archives http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/aus-vic-goldfields I would like to encourage users to apply a practice of a useful subject line, something that encourages a user to enter the email to have a look. eg. Subject: HOWARD family - Ballarat and Bendigo Then when in the body of the email, to give more than surnames. Let it be surnames, let it be a summation of a life or two, let it be periods. HOWARD family: father William, mother Isabella (née Jowles), children: James, William, Ellen, Robert, Elizabeth, Theodore, Isabella, Thomas, Robert, John. Originally from Wigan, Lancashire. Arrived "Great Britain" to Geelong 1872, to Ballarat, then to Bendigo (c.1881). more detail at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~billinghurst I hope that doesn't put a huge burden of time, and presents a few windows of opporunity. I also hope that you too agree that it is more of a benefit. Thanks. Regards, Andrew List-admin AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS mailing list

Google is a pretty useful resource for searching. For instance the first hit is ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dentition So it's likely to be a infection caused by teething given it's a 25 week old child. Hi all, Recently I was given a copy of a letter to the Maryborough Borough Council, from the residents of Newtown and White Hills. Dated December 31st 1889, it was to do with the 'Chinese Market Gardeners' fencing off the Four Mile Creek, thus cutting off there water supply. It is signed by the following, happy to send a hard copy to anybody who has connections.
