This seems to fit if you allow Mary and Marion (and Maryanne and Marian and May) to be the same name, sort of. Age is near enough, too.... and Euroa, Violet Town, same region. Trying to trace Henry SWIFT, left his wife in SA, married Mary Matilda MILLER (nee WHEELER) in 1870 at Ballarat under the name of POOL and had two daughters before she found out he was already married. Found next at Clunes in 1886 as John MILLS with another wife and family, names unknown. (All this from a police report which peters out in 1886.) Anyone researching the above names? Henry was a miner from Somerset, migrated with his family to SA in 1856 where they first moved to Burra, later Moonta. Henry disappeared just months after his marriage to Esther COLEMAN and before his son David Henry SWIFT was born. Son David and his wife Mary Ann BROMLEY (married Cobar NSW) moved to Victoria and had children born there from 1887. Henry had two brothers, Robert SWIFT b. 1832 and William SWIFT b. 1835 who have also disappeared from SA. Henry placed ads in the Argus in 1860 trying to contact Robert who was last heard from at Ararat. This is one complicated family and I would like to hear from anyone who can shed any light one the above Swift men. Jill
Hi List I hope that someone out there can help me! I have come across an ancestor getting married by "Special License" in Victoria ( not technically goldfields related - but I do hope someone can help) in 1943. I have checked the Online BDM - and there is no listing for this marriage -so, does anyone know where I would go to find more information? This marriage did not last, and Lewis married again in Perth in 1954 - so that (naturally) leads me to know when a divorce would have happened and if there was any children in this marriage? Has anyone got any suggestions?? The notice below was taken from the "West Australian" 12 Oct 1943 HILLS-RUSS (special IIcence).-OnOctober 9, Victoria, by the Rev Lovell, W. L. (Lewis), RAN. HMAS Shropshire, second eldest son of Mr and Mrs H. Hills. Harrogate-street. Leederville- to olle. daughter of Mr and Mrs Russ, Broad-street, West Footscray I look forward to hearing from anyone who may have some ideas. Cheers Virginia Mount Isa, Qld

Hi Listers, Many thanks to Dawn, Judy, Beth and Pam for information on the marriage of Agnes Hastings Moyle, and the death of her two-way :) sister in law, Emma Jane Moyle Hastings, and for bonuses of information from other entries and the Argus which proved I had other information wrong. No one was able to find an entry for their sister in law, Mary Jane (Davies) Hastings, but we all know that she may have gone interstate, or NZ following the gold, or remarried, or be hiding under another spelling, or even taken off overseas elsewhere. It's my own fault for not asking my grandmother when I was researching this family in 1969, but I was not allowed to take notes, and I probably forgot she even existed by the time I got home to remind me to make a note on my hand to ask next time I visited :) Cheers, Tom

A major trigger in the privacy debate was the proposed Australia Card - about 1985, IIRC. The discussions covered much of our present situation. The legislation got voted down in the Senate, a double dissolution of Parliament followed, but it was eventually ditched. In its place we have tax file numbers, which, without fanfare, do a lot of the same job. The Federation & Great War indexes have been withdrawn from sale. I don't think you can buy them now. The marriages are still fine, but births from 1909 can't be bought unless you have very stringent proof of who you are the persons birth, its not only privacy its also identity fraud. As a matter of history, the whole privacy of birth certificates was started by a court case in New South Wales when a grandmother discovered her grand daughter had bought her birth certificate. She took NSW registry to court and won. Dianne Hughes from a lovely wet Teesdale
