Seaching for the death of Ann(ie) Scholes around 1873, possibly around St. Arnaud. Parents were Timothy Houghton and Sarah Tongue. Cheers Ian Rumbold >
Thanks Chris I have found an online supplier and ordered the book. Frightened after I had started to search at the values of some of my own books, think I should up my insurance, although a lot of my books are not available and I definitely need to improve my index. Good evening, I wondered if it would be possible to put a notice on the list asking any Historical Society who might have church records, which they think don't appear on VPI. The reason I'm asking, the late Anne Levens was in touch with a number of historical societies and recived CD's from them with church records, Anne's husband had said they belong to Anne's estate. we need to find these records again. Births, Deaths & Marriages are trying to find missing Early Church Record. Because I have a fair knowledge of church records I've been asked by Peter Gloury who is doing Anne's job at the moment, to try and find as many as I can so they can be entered. There won't be a CD but the records will go on the BDM webpage. thanks Dianne Hughes
Does anyone have any information on the John MILLS who married Thirza TAMBLYN in 1872 at Clunes, Vic. They had a couple of children there then moved onto Nine Mile Creek, Vic. and had more. Thirza died there in 1886. Trying to establish whether or not this John Mills is the Henry SWIFT I am trying to trace. Jill (Brisbane)
Thank you all those that have me find my missing person. Your guidance and help has helped enormously Cheers Lorraine Mooroopna
Thanx to Marcelle, Barbara and Janine for all their help and attachments. I did have the RAN records - but had negleted to re look at them - upon viewing them again I can see his next of kin (after his mother) was a Mary E HILLS c/o H HARE in Nar Nar Goon - I have found Herbert and Jessie HARE in Nar Nar Goon on the Electoral Rolls but not Mary/Mollie HILLS However, I find Mary Elizabeth RUSS on the Electoral for 1942 at the address listed in the newspaper - but no other RUSS's are listed there - the only saving grace I have is that the online Marriage records in Victoria only go up to 1942 - for some reason I thought I saw a marriage for 1944 when I checked them. So maybe - in another year or two I will find it online - alternatively - I could send a request to Vic BMD and they will do a "search" for me . Lew is actually a very lucky man - he was on board the Sydney for a while before being transferred - and we know the fate of the Sydney! Using TROVE I discovered that Shropshire got into an "australian port" (not mentioned I guess for security reasons! However there is alot of right up in the Sydney papers) in Oct 1943 - then he married with days of its arrival - so I can only assume that it was a rushed wedding as per a suggestion I received from someone else on the list. According to the website that was suggested to view - the Shropshire arrived in Perth 24 Sept 1943 - and WA boys were given leave, then they arrived in Sydney 2 Oct 1943 - no mention of Melbourne - so he must of made his way to Melbourne to get married and that was why it was rushed I suppose - the left Sydney on 29 October 1943. I have sent a msg to Mr Nicholls - who runs the site, maybe he will remember Lew? Hmmm - sadly that bounced back - oh well. Thankyou very much, to everyone for taking the time to read my msg and help me out all the best Virginia
The Moree FHS, NSW is researching the men who signed the petition for Moree to become a town in 1859. Richard Glazebrook has us stumped. After trawling through BDM,s, convicts, immigration the only reference to a Richard Glazebrook is in the Melbourne Argus unclaimed letters in the 1850's. Was he at Moree then? The next time he is mentioned is 1868 as a shareholder in the Ballarat Fire Insurance Co. In 1869 the National Insurance Co took over the Ballarat Company. Seems to be plenty of Glazebrooks in the Goldfields area. Would appreciate any help with this puzzle. Would the Insurance Co records still be in existance somewhere? This may not even be the man. Thank you. Leslie tillaloo@bigpond.com
I am wanting to connect with descendents of the above. Of the five STEPHENSON/STEVENSON daughters born to Matthew STEPHENSON/STEVENSON and Winifred SHANAHAN four survived to marry - Winifred married William CANTWELL, Susanna married Samuel SAWERS, Hanora married Joseph MONKS and Ellen married Frederick DAMYON. I would like to hear from anyone who are descendants of these families. My husband is a great grandson of William CANTWELL. Shirlee Wellington, NZ
Have sent Navy Records and various info to Virginia off-list Marcelle Western Australia
Hi Virginia Special license was used for a number of reasons. Usually it was to hasten the marriage and avoid the need for posting banns in the parish church which took place each week, three to four weeks prior to the wedding. This was especially true if one of the parties was not of that parish. It was also required for those who were under age (21) to get married as permission of a parent/guardian was required. In much earlier times it indicated that the parties were reasonably well to do as there was a fee for a license which, although a nominal amount, was still often beyond the means of the average working class couple. Hope this helps. Cheers, Maureen
Special licence just meant that the couple could marry in a hurry, rather than wait for what statutory period applied. In the 'old' days, marriage was usually by banns - that is, the upcoming marriage was announced in the church for three, or possibly four, weeks prior to the marriage. But marriage by licence was also an option. My g-g-grandparents married by licence in 1855. I'm not sure what the legal requirement was in the 1940s (in NSW it's currently one month and one day), but I'd imagine a lot of couples married by special licence because the groom was due to sail off to war in the very near future. There doesn't seem to be NAA file on William Lewis Hills, but he does appear on the WW2 Nominal Roll. He joined the Navy 2 July, 1938 and was discharged 18 April, 1951. I wonder if the Rev. Lovell was his ship's Chaplain and married the couple .. possibly just before ship was due to sail .. could the marriage have been registered in the ship's home port, or the next port of call. Just a thought. WA marriages only go to 1936, so not possible to check for a Fremantle marriage. You might to look at http://www.hmasshropshire.com/contents.htm - lots of piccies and names mentioned. Never know what you might find. It might even be worth contacting Stan Nicholls, at this site. He served on the Shropshire. Cheers Barbara
I add a new surname of interest to my research: ROBERTS from Clunes. There were several ROBERTS in Clunes but the family I am interested in were butchers. They were in Clunes from about 1860 until the 1970s. An associated name, by marriage, is WEATHERSON, also of Clunes. (Buried Clunes) Earlier generations were also associated with Coonooer, St Arnaud, and Charleton, Trevor
Hi Virginia, I've never come across that either, but I suspect that WWII may have something to do with it! I'd try looking for his military service files at the National Archives of Australia.
