    1. RE: Military Records Heidelberg Repat. Hospital
    2. Judy and the group, I have previously sought medical records similar to your interest without result via FOI, you might have more luck. Certainly, the NAA WW1 records will reveal his service records and abbreviated medical information. I believe that Bundoora Hospital would have been Laurundal - Mont Park - Plenty Hospital all on the East side of Plenty Road Bundoora, these are all now closed. This group of Psychiatric Hospitals and out buildings was the centre of Melbourne's Psychiatric care establishment, (apart from Kew Asylum) it was on at least 100 acres and possibly a hundred buildings. Now, (I believe) the main buildings remain and the rest have been removed for a very large housing estate. This housing estate was established in about 2000. On the West side of Plenty Rd Bundoora across the road from Laurendal etc there was another Hospital possibly (definitely) for War related issues. I can't remember its name and it was removed in about 1992. Given that Laurundal was across the road, I'm guessing, that it too, was a Psychiatric establishment. It's possible he was either at this place or across the road. Both would have relationships with the Repat Hospital. If your Gdad was initially at the Repat (a few K's from Bundoora in West Heidelberg), he would have been initially at a place called the duckboards on the north side of the main Hospital, it became a car park. The main hospital was for work and the Duckboards were for convalescing after the work!!!!. The Duckboards were army huts with timber interlinking pathways between them, I'm guessing that they were named from the similar structures on the floors of the trenches and between the guns in WW1-France. I do have a small historical book on Laurundal etc, I can scan it if you like. Hospital Thanks everyone who took up my request and offered good advice. My grandfather died in Bundoora Hospital which was the mental asylum attached to Heidelberg Repat. He suffered a series of strokes, caused by 'shrapnel on the brain' - according to my grandmother. I guess remnants of shrapnel could have sat there for some years before 'shifting' and causing damage. A mental hospital would be the only place for them to be managed in those days. This hospital is now the Bundoora Homestead Art Gallery and will be worth a visit. I might just as well go over to the Austin Hospital and find the memorial chapel and gardens. Haven't been to Heidelberg since the late fifties, early sixties when I used to go to dances at the Heidelberg Town Hall. Nurses from the Royal Melbourne Hosp. got in for free!! Thanks again, Judy. 3. Hello everyone Just over a week ago I posted a message to the list asking for help to find Walter Leslie OGDEN, I didn't reply sooner to the lovely people who asked for more information on this person, as I decided to buy the death Certificate of the person I thought was his father, it only just arrived in the mail to day, and I'm happy to say that my hunch was right, that Harold Gillis OGDEN was his father, so mystery solved. Many thanks for those who took the time to read and reply to my query. Bye for now Judi WA

    3. The "repat" is still there and though being altered, let fall down in parts etc, parts are still being used as outpatients section from the Austin Hospital. I would be most surprised if there were any records kept there though - the whole place seems ripe for the developers to move in. (Whether it would be for housing or hospital or high rise, I cannot tell.) I have attended there as an outpatient occasionally at a special clinic, last visit a good two years ago now. Also my daughter lived until a couple of months ago in Waterdale Rd - I used to pass it on the way to visit her. I live within a few km of it, but have not been over that way for some time. I believe the old place is still there but has closed as a hospital. Someone on the list will know more about this than I do, but I have an idea that servicemen and women are now treated elsewhere, maybe at the nearby - and recently rebuilt - Austin & Mercy Hospitals, which share a common site in Heidelberg. I think your best bet would be to first contact the Defence or Federal Health Departments, before you head out to Heidelberg on what could be a fruitless trip to a hospital that no longer exists. 3. Thanks to Chris, Shirley and Trevor for their quick responses. I do have the WW1 Military history of my grandfather, William Thomas Edward HOLLIDAY which are wonderful to have, but I am looking for his medical records at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital during the forties and up to when he died in 1951. They must be archived somewhere, but whether they are accessible is another matter. Still, if I knew where they are located I could make enquiries. When I am in Melbourne next month I might go up to Heidelberg and have a snoop around. There is a chapel and memorial garden which would be interesting to see and you never know once you get talking to people, what they will come up with. Thanks all, Much appreciated, Judy

    3. Assuming he fought in the First World War his personnel file will be on the National Archives of Australia site and can be downloaded free of charge. It will contain his medical records while in service. If he served in WWII I think you would need to establish next of kin status. 3. I think you'll find only abbreviated details on the NAA Files. My father was in the Great War and survived but there is a separate medical file that covers the period after discharge. I seem to recall that was available from SCMA at Vic Barracks in Melbourne but you might be better off to contact Vet Affairs as the Repat Dept is now known.
