    3. Just a quick thankyou to the people who replied to my query regarding the HOPCROFT/TEMPLEMAN and McClean families. Pam that was a really interesting piece of information you sent regarding the TEMPLEMAN family popping over the ocean to Tasmania for 8 years, no wonder I couldn't find them, will join a Tassie list to see what else I can find out. Again many thanks Judi >From the West

I had this John as born 11/11/1865 Ballarat Reg'n No. 596 with parents Henry Morrow and Mary Letitia Clarke BUT.... with the marriage certificate now to hand, it states parents as "George Morrow and Mary Ann Oates" and his calculated d.o.b. would be 1874. My records show that John had a brother, George b 1855 and died 1873, so perhaps this George is my John's father. I do not have a spouse for George. (I have a Mary Ann Oates in the database but she was born 1871). The database has John died 31/5/1929 but no place, Reg'n No. shown as Vol 512, Page 29, and Rosina as died 13/4/1965, no place or Reg'n details. Joseph G Treweek married Agnes Corbett 1892 Broken Hill. But his second name is a bit of a mystery - children's birth registrations give his name as Joseph E, except Elsie's where it is shown as Joseph P. Cheers

According to her birth certificate, Geraldina was the child of Thomas Henerery, Mining Manager born Nottingham and Victoria Henery, nee Thompson born Castlemaine. What I would really like to know is if Thomas Henery or Tom Henry Bosworth was employed as a mine manager in the area at that time. T H Bosworth had been involved with mines in Tasmania but he was also a fairly well known Professor Music and a composer. Can anyone help with records of mining companies etc. Also if there was any record of a marriage between the couple I would be most interested. I have checked the online registers etc but no luck, regards Sharon

Many of the brave volunteers came from the goldfields area, so we probably all have wondered about their records at some time. Although the records aren't held in the goldfields area, many of them relate to goldfields men (and women). 1. RE: Military Records Heidelberg Repat. Hospital
    2. Helen Kenney
    3. The hospital of which you speak opposite Laurundal, was known as the Bundoora Repatriation Hospital now the Bundoora Homestead Art Centre. Until 1936 it was a private residence and operated as a hospital until 1993. There has been a book released detailing the complex it is called Bundoora Homestead-the Smith Family Era 1899-1920 by Jacqueline Healy 2007. Some of the soldiers also could have been placed at Warburton Sanatorium, Daylesford to take the waters, Stawell Sanatorium and the Austin Hospital, I believe that there was also a facility at Beechworth. The main building of Laurundal still exists although in a serious state of decay. Kew Asylum was a very interesting place housing those with psychiatric illnesses and children who were unfortunate enough to be born with genetic abnormalities or birth accidents. The parents of these children were convinced to hand them over to the state and many of them lived in intuitions from babies until death. I thank God that we live in a more enlightened age now where parents are encouraged and supported to look after their children who might have been born with Down Syndrome or cerebral palsy. I worked as a volunteer at most of these places and found them to be dehumanising. Helen -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-goldfields-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-goldfields-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ian.Harrison@csiro.au Sent: 17 April 2011 08:33 To: jude.a@iinet.net.au; AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: Military Records Heidelberg Repat. Hospital Judy and the group, I have previously sought medical records similar to your interest without result via FOI, you might have more luck. Certainly, the NAA WW1 records will reveal his service records and abbreviated medical information. I believe that Bundoora Hospital would have been Laurundal - Mont Park - Plenty Hospital all on the East side of Plenty Road Bundoora, these are all now closed. This group of Psychiatric Hospitals and out buildings was the centre of Melbourne's Psychiatric care establishment, (apart from Kew Asylum) it was on at least 100 acres and possibly a hundred buildings. Now, (I believe) the main buildings remain and the rest have been removed for a very large housing estate. This housing estate was established in about 2000. On the West side of Plenty Rd Bundoora across the road from Laurendal etc there was another Hospital possibly (definitely) for War related issues. I can't remember its name and it was removed in about 1992. Given that Laurundal was across the road, I'm guessing, that it too, was a Psychiatric establishment. It's possible he was either at this place or across the road. Both would have relationships with the Repat Hospital. If your Gdad was initially at the Repat (a few K's from Bundoora in West Heidelberg), he would have been initially at a place called the duckboards on the north side of the main Hospital, it became a car park. The main hospital was for work and the Duckboards were for convalescing after the work!!!!. The Duckboards were army huts with timber interlinking pathways between them, I'm guessing that they were named from the similar structures on the floors of the trenches and between the guns in WW1-France. I do have a small historical book on Laurundal etc, I can scan it if you like. Hospital Thanks everyone who took up my request and offered good advice. My grandfather died in Bundoora Hospital which was the mental asylum attached to Heidelberg Repat. He suffered a series of strokes, caused by 'shrapnel on the brain' - according to my grandmother. I guess remnants of shrapnel could have sat there for some years before 'shifting' and causing damage. A mental hospital would be the only place for them to be managed in those days. This hospital is now the Bundoora Homestead Art Gallery and will be worth a visit. I might just as well go over to the Austin Hospital and find the memorial chapel and gardens. Haven't been to Heidelberg since the late fifties, early sixties when I used to go to dances at the Heidelberg Town Hall. Nurses from the Royal Melbourne Hosp. got in for free!! Thanks again, Judy.
