I wonder if anyone has amongst their McNamara family members buried in either cemetery in Ballarat, a Martin and Ann McNamara. I have no details of their addresses as both died in hospital/benevolent home, but ages at death were Ann - 81 years, with Martin aged 80 years although showing as 30 years on Ballarat C.D. I believe this couple may have been married in Sydney before coming to Victoria. My interest is through their son Patrick (b1861). Any assistance appreciated.

Hi List, I have just returned from a lovely trip to Victoria where I spent some time in Elmore. While out at the Corop Cemetery visiting my g.g.grandparents I was horrified to find that some idiot had splashed pink primer paint over some of the gravestones. The next day, a working bee was valiantly trying to remove the damage, but with minimal success. Now back home, I am still thinking about it and wondering if they have managed to clean the mess. Anyone know? Volunteers look after this little cemetery out in the bush, and it is always a tranquil place to stop, wander and reflect on those pioneers lying there in peace. The graves of my g.g.grandparents, Jane and James McKENZIE and my g.aunty 'Tott' - Jane Elizabeth WILLIAMS have not been vandalised, but if they had, I wouldn't know about it and that makes me sad. A huge thank you to those wonderful volunteers in the district who care. Judy.....Perth W.Australia
Dear List Thank you for all the help and useful resources that were sent to me. I've been able to move forward in pinning down the period of time in which this image was taken. Very much appreciated and great resource information which I will be able to put to good use in the future, no doubt. This query has now been completed, thankyou. Kind regards, Rowena
Hi Rowena, Go to the Rootschat site (just google it). On the first page a list of headings includes one something like "restore and date old photos". Read the rules in the first few messages, then upload your photo. Knowledgeable people will comment on age, fashion, possble time frame etc and, if you request it, volunteers will restore your photo, removing tears, blobs, cracks etcc. - all for free. This is a wonderful site where I have had many photgos rescued and queries answered. Marie
Rowena, MargM is correct this is the information from the book. THE MECHANICAL EYE IN AUSTRALIA - photography 1841 - 1900 Alan Davies & Peter Stanbury ISBN 0 19 554604 0 PUBLISHER: Oxford University Press ARTHUR W.BURMAN 213 Chapel Street, Windsor, Victoria 1886 - 91 WILLIAM BURMAN 100 Chapel Street, Windsor, Victoria 1884 - 85 WILLIAM B BURMAN Chapel Street, Prahran, Victoria 1869 BURMAN PHOTO STUDIO No.2 BRANCH 100 Chapel Street, Prahran, Victoria 1884-89 Chapel Street appears to divide Prahran from Windsor being adjoining suburbs of Melbourne. The Windsor Address gives you a time frame of 1884 - 1891. I hope this helps. Hi Rowena There's a book in many libraries published sometime ago called ' The Mechanical Eye' . This is a specialised directory of photographers. You might also be able to narrow down a time frame via VIC Post Office Directories . Dear List I've been given a photo of relative John Shugg which I think will be between about 1855 - 1875. He settled in Maryborough, Victoria with his wife Barbara Ann (nee Hunt) in early 1855. The photo was taken at Burman's Portrait Parlour, Chapel St, Windsor, in Melbourne. I would like to get a better idea of the time frame of the image. Can anyone suggest how I can identify the time frame by the clothing he is wearing? Or does anyone know of a genealogy service that would do this, or an historical costume specialist? Any ideas would be welcome. Kind regards, Rowena
My ancestors George and Sarah Elizabeth Yarwood died in 1864 and 1868 in goldfields area, They left five children under twelve. One ended up as a ward of the state in Melbourne. I have now found Sarah Elizabeth's sister Ann, married to James Hough and living in Castlemaine. Is there any way I can find out if she took the orphaned children in, as apart from the one sent to Melbourne, they all stayed in the area until adulthood. It is a family mystery! Jenny
Hi list, for those with English ancestors the Yesterdays site, link below has been updated with further records of Apprenticeships covering Netherseal, Marston Montgomery and Melbourne, the one in Derbyshire. It also has a list of those transported after having been found guilty by Quarter Sessions in 1837 in Derbyshire. List the persons from whom the property was taken or offence committed. If link fails Google Yesterdays Journey. mike -- http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm
